I take a holistic and integrative approach to therapy which involves integrating various elements of different theories and practice. I lean most heavily on approaches focused on how people’s thinking can change feelings and behaviors while also implementing an approach focused on helping clients achieve their highest potential. Instead of energy spent on the past or on negative behaviors, I emphasize the goodness in clients and work toward each person’s growth and self-actualization. I also use approaches oriented toward problem-solving including Hypnotherapy, NLP Brain Training, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and Coaching.

Have you noticed your child, tween, or teen is isolating more? Expressing self-doubt and poor self-esteem? Feeling sad or angry? Not spending time with friends or feeling left out? Perhaps they have been arguing with you more or having anger outbursts at home? Changes in school, friends, or home life can cause worries or changes in their mood. As a teen or young adult, have you been feeling this way?

The journey of finding a therapist can be difficult and frustrating at times. You may ask yourself, "do I really need to talk with someone?" Coming to the realization that you may need to talk to some one is challenging . Taking that first step in searching, for someone, to talk to is moving in the direction, of finding peace, hope and healing.

As a systemic and attachment-based therapist, I believe we are all looking for connection, belonging, and acceptance. However old we are – infant, child, teen , or adult – we need to make sense of what happens to us, inside of us, and in our relationships. Our life experiences shape us in profound ways; our sense of self, and how we manage emotions, respond to stress, and connect with others. When life experiences are adverse, our body and brain can make meaning in ways that can cause distress. I help clients connect with their innate ability to change and heal difficult experiences so they can find peace and self-worth at any age.

I do believe each person and family has unique resources to activate healing processes. Brief Therapy requires a highly collaborative approach between therapist and clients, and focuses on practical solutions and clear communication. Brief Therapy offers a maximum of 10 sessions but usually don't need that many to promote change in the problem that is presented. I work with individuals, couples and families with a variety of problems: marital conflict and affairs, depression and anxiety, children and adolescent problems, addiction, eating disorders, stress and work related problems. I also provide online-therapy services.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
