I enjoy working with young adults and adults to address concerns with anxiety, depression, spirituality, self-esteem/body image, relational difficulties, transitions, and more. My desire in counseling is to provide a place where people feel safe, seen, and validated. I love asking questions that help the individual dig deeper to learn about themselves while challenging mindsets that may be hindering growth. Ultimately, I hope to empower my clients to use the skills and knowledge gained in counseling to reach their goals.

I strive to help you achieve your goals in becoming the best you you can be. However, becoming the best version of yourself is a journey, and for many people, therapy is the first step. Seeking counseling is fundamental in this journey for healing, growth, and self-compassion. I aim to provide a nonjudgmental, safe place for you to explore areas of your life that are no longer serving you. I hope to encourage clients to step into the daylight and let it go.

With EFT and CBT strategies, they will better understand and respond to each other.
I work with a broad set of clients including children ages 10+, adults, families, and couples, often working with anxiety disorders and relational issues. Managing anxious symptoms and relational concerns can be very relieving and rewarding, creating a better quality of life. Building a trusting relationship is also important to me. Ideally, clients will recognize that they have a strong ally in me. I appreciate working with clients interested in learning more about their condition/diagnosis and related symptoms, exploring how they influence them personally and inter-personally, and identifying strategies to help cope effectively.

What would life be like if you could spend more time doing what really matters instead of just making it through the day and surviving? Have you experienced hard things in your past that still affect you today, and you wish that would change? Do you feel that sharp twinge in your chest when you think about just how far away you are from the relationships you want? If you have ever struggled with motivation, meaning, a difficult childhood, or a relationship that has lost its fire and hope, you understand how painful and gray the world can be when life isn't working.

You feel lost. Abandoned. Like you’re trapped at the bottom of a dark pit with no way out. You yearn to connect with others, yet you can’t help but withdraw further into yourself by the day. You want so badly to feel better, but the truth is you don’t think you deserve to. It’s as though life has lost some essential spark. It’s challenging to summon the energy to do even the simplest necessary tasks, let alone try to have anything resembling fun. It feels as though you’re getting further and further from who you want to be, and it’s hard to recognize the person you’ve become. You wonder if there’s any way to get back on track.

All of us have within ourselves the ability to live happier lives. As you understand old patterns and learn positive ways of dealing with problems, you can learn to be in charge rather than allowing problems to control or overwhelm you. I have learned this in my own life after my wife became a paraplegic over 20 years ago. As children, we learn "strategies" that help us survive in our environment but, as we grow older, these same "strategies" can usually interfere with our relationships. We also live in a challenging and fast-paced world, with technological changes that we are just beginning to understand and cope with.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
