I work with a variety of concerns, including ADHD, trauma, depression, anxiety, and attachment challenges. I also have several years of experience in foster care, where I supported children and teens through the unique difficulties that come with that system. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for resilience and the many different paths people take toward healing.

I approach therapy from an attachment-based, person-centered perspective, integrating evidence-based modalities tailored to your needs.
Have your relationships begun to feel less fulfilling, or has your relationship with yourself become more challenging? You are not alone, and support is available. Through my work as a crisis and couples counselor, I have helped many individuals, couples, and families navigate difficulties in their relationships with others and themselves. I work with couples of all orientations, adult families, and individuals seeking greater self-understanding. I also have experience supporting those in ethical non-monogamous relationships, both individually and with partners.

When we have been hurt in the past, we carry our wounds into the present. Not only do we carry the painful memories, but also all the accompanying feelings such as shame, anger and powerlessness. Our nervous system is on high alert and our brains prepare our bodies to survive. Our muscles get tense, our chests get tight, our shoulders ache. Trauma doesn’t have to be one terrible event. It can be the daily impact of not feeling safe and secure in our early environments. Often, we think that we have moved on, but our brains and bodies do not forget.

I began helping others in 1990 as a Peer Counselor (Drug Exemption NCO) while on active duty in the Marine Corps. After earning degrees in Psychology and Social Work at UNCW/ECU, I obtained licensure to practice independently with the Virginia Board of Health Professionals in 2004. I am originally from the Hampton Roads area but have worked internationally with people from many different backgrounds. I have continued to support the military, as well as the community at large, for over 3 decades with evidence-based treatments for trauma (PTSD).

The hardest mountain to climb is the one within, what does your mountain look like? Each person's healing journey to the top of their mountain, no matter how small or fraught with twists and turns, is important and deserves a safe, authentic space to be heard. Healing is not a linear process. It takes commitment, honesty, motivation, and oftentimes tough work to face one's reality versus where they want to be. Healing also takes a supportive and empathetic shoulder to help carry the burden as you reach your goals. I would be honored to help you discover your confidence, values, truths, and ultimately, summit your mountain.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
