Male Therapists in Roanoke, VA
If you find yourself preparing and bracing for that offensive comment; you regulate your speech, dress, and actions to fit in or be safe; or you navigate how much of your experiences to share for fear that you won’t be heard, or that your story will show different your reality is from others—then I want you to know that you’re not crazy, and you don’t have to go it alone. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor who knows what it’s like to be immersed in spaces that don’t culturally or racially reflect me, my identity, or my values. And to live in spaces that reject me as I live into my full identity as a black man, a person of color.

My passion is driven through the use of self, and fostering an environment that can lead to self-actualization. We often ask ourselves, how can we become better and feel like we have self-worth? Do you find yourself often thinking, how can I take the next step to better my overall emotional health and live a life of purpose and fulfillment? Therapy can lead to a better understanding of our own mental health and reveal underlining causes that are often caused by our own self-disrupting behaviors. I believe that each and every person has the toolbelt they need to overcome their daily struggles, but we often just need some assistance.

We monitor progress and change the tactics, as-needed, until goals have been achieved.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with 8 years of experience. I specialize in supporting individuals of all ages through substance use/addiction, mood disorders, serious mental illness, trauma/PTSD, and stress-related conditions. With a diverse background in community healthcare settings, I take the perspective that most emotional and mental pain results from emotional injury or unresolved emotion. By extension, talk therapy facilitates the mind and body’s natural healing process.

The strength of our relationships is not the absence of concerns and problems. The strength of our relationships is the ability to manage those concerns and problems successfully. Relationship concerns and problems may cause anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental health issues. Unresolved issues affect churches, families, marriages, and workplaces. When we relate well with others, we thrive instead of just surviving. One person in a relationship can make a difference.

I believe optimal therapy is collaborative, authentic, and utilizes the here-and-now. I seek emotionally resonant moments between the client and myself—moments where you sense that I have an accurate and empathic understanding of your world and your experience. I believe these moments of resonance are a necessary component of therapy and contain the ability to undo aloneness and bring about clarity, coherence, and accelerated change.

What would life be like if you could spend more time doing what really matters instead of just making it through the day and surviving? Have you experienced hard things in your past that still affect you today, and you wish that would change? Do you feel that sharp twinge in your chest when you think about just how far away you are from the relationships you want? If you have ever struggled with motivation, meaning, a difficult childhood, or a relationship that has lost its fire and hope, you understand how painful and gray the world can be when life isn't working.

I am a co-conspirator with my clients, confronting the dilemmas of being human with openness, compassion, and curiosity. Being human is weirdly counterintuitive. All the things I do to avoid or control how I feel seem to make it worse. Let's see if we can find something that works?

I know how important it is to have someone who will listen. I enjoy hearing others life experience, walking alongside them in vulnerable moments, and having authentic moments of honesty, openness, and healing. The goal of counseling is not knowing everything at the start (or even the finish!) but being willing to try, willing to learn, and willing to share. I enjoy helping others gain understanding about themselves and their world, make progress towards their life goals, and feel more stable in their actions and direction. I look forward to helping you with skills and knowledge that you will act on between sessions and beyond.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
