Grief is often a forgotten need of people recovering from
substance use
disorders.
Are you desiring to reclaim your life after a painful loss? Are recent changes in your normal routine have you feeling emotionally drained? Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss of any kind. Whether it's the death of a loved one, a divorce, career change, a move, change in health, loss of freedom, or any of the 40+ losses a person may experience during their life time; I will walk this journey with you! Also, with 35 years as Substance Abuse Treatment Professional and an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist, an additional aspect of my work is centered in the correlation between addiction, grief and relapse.

Hello! My name is Jen and I specialize in working with the queer community, trauma, and
substance use
(you do not need to qualify for all or any of these to come see me). If complex trauma and PTS/D symptoms are things you struggle with, I am trained in EMDR and Brainspotting. In my office you choose what you’d like to address and what is off limits. This is your space to explore and process what you need and want to. You are the only expert of yourself. I like to meet you where you’re at and explore what is challenging and/or painful. My goal is to help my community heal and find wholeheartedness and acceptance, exactly as you are.

My specialties include working with anxiety and
substance use
with individuals, couples, and families.
From pouring a glass of water to playing piano, driving to work and checking our smart phones, so much of what we do is habit. The more iterations we perform, the more engrained it becomes. As it turns out, the way we think is no different. Left unaware, how we see ourselves and the world around us can become automated and no longer a choice. It becomes a reaction rather than a response.

Many of my clients seek to change their
substance use
habits.
My first goal in therapy is to create a space and relationship where you feel safe to explore issues without fear of judgment or confrontation. From there we begin to explore the potential of change, and ways we could alleviate your issues. We begin together with a solution-focused approach, as we gently progress towards deeper issues where appropriate. I utilize a variety of theories and techniques to assist this exploration such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), etc.

I have more than 15 years of experience working with children, adolescents and adults who are seeking help with mental health concerns related to depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, trauma, anxiety, PTSD,
substance use
disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, as well as life transitions and other obstacles.
Wellness has been defined as a way of life oriented toward optimal health and well-being in which body, mind, and spirit are integrated to live more fully within the human and natural community. Ideally, it is the optimum state of health and well-being that each individual is capable of achieving. When working together in counseling, I perceive one’s thoughts are related to their feelings and reactions to events, not the events themselves. Counseling sessions are individualized to meet the unique needs of each client.

Doesn't it make sense to talk with someone who has actually experienced what you are going through? Someone who understands drinking and/or
substance use
can both cause problems AND provide much needed relief. I have been where you are, or somewhere close, and together we can find a way out. My ability to help is grounded in 10 years of active addiction, followed by 27 years of continuous recovery and 14 years of academic training (MSW, PhD). I understand the science, and I know the suffering. I work with others who have suffered, their families and loved ones.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
