I offer soul-centered psychotherapy that integrates modern clinical tools with ancient wisdom traditions. My approach is holistic, working at the intersection of mind, body, and spirit. Clients come to me seeking not just symptom relief, but meaningful transformation—especially during times of spiritual awakening, grief, identity shifts, or emotional overwhelm. I work best with seekers—those who sense there’s more to healing than symptom relief, who feel called to explore the deeper terrain of the psyche, body, and soul with curiosity, courage, and compassion.

On the outside, you’re the one who has it all together. But on the inside, the pressure is relentless. You hold yourself to impossibly high standards, and when you can’t meet them, the inner critic takes over. You feel like nothing is ever "good enough," and you’re constantly let down, by others, and most painfully, by yourself. I specialize in working with women who are drowning in the "hidden" side of high achievement: perfectionism, chronic anxiety, and the weight of everyone else's expectations. Whether you are navigating the high-pressure demands of your career or the overwhelming transitions of motherhood and postpartum life,

My ideal client yearns for balance of body, mind and spirit and is genuinely ready for change. While many issues, needs and goals may seem vastly different, they often fall under the umbrella of stress due to unresolved trauma, fear, insecurity and feelings of unworthiness. The resulting negative self-talk can sabotage even feasible and attainable goals as the subconscious hangs onto old programming that serves no purpose. Working as co-creators of success, my clients and I "weed the garden" and plant new seeds for generating positive inner dialogue and confidence.

I specialize in empowering women who want to experience greater confidence, fulfillment, and ease in their lives. As women, we are often conditioned to believe that criticizing and shaming ourselves will motivate us to change and grow. In reality, these habits keep us small and lead us to speak unkindly to ourselves, doubt our decision-making, and generally feel unsafe and inadequate in our minds and bodies. I teach you how to make the skills of truly loving and trusting yourself your most powerful ally in reaching your goals and creating meaningful change in your life.

“Has life got you down?” That classic question that we all come back to when things just seem a bit too crazy. The question that we’ve heard so many times, even when we were a kid. So let me ask you, has life got you down? Do you feel like your life has transitioned to a place where you feel lost, alone, or quite like nobody really understands what it’s like to be in your shoes? Has anxiety, depression, relational issues or trauma, family conflict or parenting issues beaten you down? Let me ask you one last question: is the idea of therapy terrifying? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please believe me, there’s a way.

I work with people who are tired of talking about it. They understand their patterns. They can trace them back. And something is still stuck. That's usually when people find me. I'm Emily — therapist, yoga teacher, and owner of Big Oak Wellness in Roanoke, Virginia. Fifteen years in, the thread running through all of it is this: most of what keeps us stuck isn't in our heads. It's in the body. In nervous system responses developed long before we could make sense of them. Understanding it intellectually isn't enough.

Neuro-Linguistic (NLP) Therapists
How does neuro-linguistic programming work?
A therapist using Neuro-linguistic programming might start by building a strong rapport and gathering information about the client’s objectives and any problem areas. Then the NLP therapist will employ NLP techniques to guide their client toward healthier thoughts and behaviors. Clients will learn how to better manage their moods and hone their communication skills. NLP will conclude with the therapist and client making a plan for how to integrate the positive changes into their daily life in the future.

What are some techniques used in neuro-linguistic programming?
NLP therapists often employ anchoring, so the client begins to automatically associate their trigger with a healthier response. Clients also learn how to reframe a situation to change the way they react to it for the better, and how to replace the negative beliefs that are holding them back. Many NLP clients practice visualization or forming a mental image of themselves attaining their goals. Every NLP therapist will have their own preferred approach with specific techniques that they have found to be helpful for their clients.

How long does neuro-linguistic programming take?
Since neuro-linguistic programming is not regulated, the length of treatment can vary greatly. Some therapists may only use NLP in a single session, while others may employ it over the course of weeks, months, or even years. It depends greatly on the type and severity of the problem being treated, as well as the individual client’s response to NLP treatment.

Is neuro-linguistic programming evidence-based?
While some people may find neuro-linguistic programming helpful, either in therapy or in their career or personal development, the science behind this approach is inconclusive. Most of the available studies are small in scale and have produced mixed results, and the commercial nature of NLP lends itself to conflicts of interest. More research is needed. In the meantime, practitioners must use their best judgment of whether NLP techniques will be helpful in meeting their clients’ individual needs.
