Sometimes we have been carrying heavy things for a long time, pain no one saw, pressure to be strong, guilt, anger, confusion, or just the weight of trying to keep it all together, I want you to know this: you don’t have to do it alone, and you don’t have to keep pretending that you’re fine. I specialize in working with folks who’ve been impacted by trauma, legal involvement, identity struggles, and the deep emotional cost of always being "the strong one." I also support men of color, athletes, and creatives who are trying to find a way back to themselves, beyond roles, expectations, or survival mode.

Hi there, I'm Sally! I draw on evidence-based therapies to guide clients through life's transitions and uncertainties with compassion, practical skills, and clarity. Every therapeutic partnership is one-of-a-kind, but my approach often weaves in psychoeducation about the brain—exploring how it functions and harnesses neuroplasticity to rewire unhelpful patterns and habits—while inviting you to envision fresh paths forward.

If your relationship feels more like a routine than a connection and if sex has become a source of stress instead of closeness, you're not imagining it. I've sat across from hundreds of couples who feel exactly the same way. And, I've watched them find their way back. I'm Valerie McDonnell, LCSW, a sex and couples therapist in Richmond, VA. I help individuals and couples struggling with desire, intimacy, communication, and the emotional distance that builds when the things that matter most go unsaid. Most of my clients aren't in crisis. They're in that uncomfortable middle, where they still care, but something has shifted.

I offer individual, couples, and group therapy. In addition to ameliorating symptoms, decreasing emotional pain, and helping to solve difficult problems, experiential therapy, along with mindfulness and somatic awareness can facilitate significant personal growth and increased wellness. My approach is broadly humanistic, meaning we seek together in a safe and secure environment, mutual understanding of you as a whole person, honing your internal "voice" and tapping into your existing strengths. Once we identify who you really are inside and what is most important to you, the path to bringing your life into alignment becomes clearer.

Emotions are an important part of life, and help us to connect with others. Sometimes our experiences with intense emotions can take away from our ability to clearly communicate with each other or appreciate ourselves. Do you find it difficult to enjoy life in the moment? too focused on the past or worried about the future? Do you wish you could connect with your family or partner in a way that doesn't lead to conflict or slammed doors? Whether you are experiencing relationship conflicts, depression, anxiety, anger, feelings of low self esteem or sex related concerns, your feelings do not have to control your life.

My patients come to me when their relationships have become a source of confusion, pain, or longing. They often feel stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand, or find themselves wanting more connection, ease, and aliveness in their relationships. Through a balance of gentle inquiry and active guidance, I help individuals and couples understand these patterns and begin to shift them. My work focuses on helping you feel more open, more connected, and more able to respond to yourself and others in ways that feel generative.

Imago Therapists
How does Imago therapy work?
Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticizing a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.

What is the Imago method?
A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.

How long does Imago therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.

Does Imago therapy work?
There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
