You're having trouble feeling safe with your partner, friends, at work; sometimes feeling safe at all. You know what you experienced was not "OK" and now you're left to experience the sleepless nights, anger, racing heart, and worries. Maybe you're questioning your worth and wondering how you will ever move on. It feels like a piece of you is missing or was even taken. Sometimes, there aren't any words to describe what it feels like in your body. Maybe it has been a month since "it" happened, maybe years. Regardless, you don't have to keep feeling this way.

Hi. Seeking therapy can be challenging and it is important to find a skilled therapist you feel comfortable and safe with. Clients find me warm, trustworthy, committed, genuine, and professional, but yet relatable. I try to balance gently challenging my clients with being accepting and non-judgmental of where they are. My 15 years of work history has provided experience in all levels of psychiatric care. I am happy to provide evidence-based, short-term or long-term therapy, for high school students through senior adults.

I have been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment-Based Family Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Counseling is a third career for me. For years I felt misaligned with my values and core beliefs and ultimately realized that I could no longer live incongruently. This internal friction eventually pushed me to pursue a role supporting the growth and development of others. My experiences have allowed me to explore life’s transitions, episodes of uncertainty, periods of darkness and many moments of joy. Although these experiences provided support for me, we are never able to know the lens through which another views the world. I approach counseling with a person-centered orientation, seeking to learn your truth to support your growth

I believe trusting clients' innate ability to understand and heal themselves. This belief also guides my work with family, couples' and children's issues. I help clients access their own emotional intelligence - awareness that a lack of confidence and support often block. I can help clients discover and articulate their desired change. I use techniques from different traditions - primarily Family Systems, Self and Developmental Psychology, cognitive/behavioral approaches, but believe primarily in the healing power of relationship.

I'm glad you are seeking help for life's challenges! My passion is to see you living to your full potential through greater consciousness and self-awareness. Tackling difficult issues together can make them less daunting, while uncovering and understanding self-defeating patterns can facilitate lasting change. Using a Jungian/depth psychological approach, we will jointly identify opportunities to grow beyond these problematic areas, gain insight and explore techniques to move towards a more rewarding life. Learning to sit with suffering can liberate us from its bondage and promotes self-compassion, both essential for mental health.

When thinking about emotional growth, I find it helpful to contrast it with our physical growth. Developing into our full-grown physical selves is a fairly automatic process based upon our genetics. Our emotional growth, however, requires guidance and nurturing from others, typically our caregivers, as we progress from childhood into adulthood. For many of us this process is short circuited, and we can find ourselves navigating a world of relationships and uncertainty without the emotional intelligence needed to recognize and understand our emotions, and to respond to those emotions in healthy and productive ways.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
