Substance Use Therapists in Mosby, VA

I see adults and adolescents of any age . I see quite a few couples and families to work through marital or parenting problems. Most of my clients are seeking insight about how to approach their problems in new ways, to acquire new understandings which enable them to see possibilities that may have been elusive to them without the added input of an experienced therapist. I have tried to develop a style that focuses on how to help people develop their capacity to tune in more deeply to their own inner awareness and knowledge, to see options that were previously unseen.

I have worked with children, adults, families, couples, and military personnel, with a myriad of issues ranging from relationship issues, trauma, substance use, stress and anxiety, adjustment disorders, grief and loss, as well as, anger.
Do you feel "stuck" or find yourself overwhelmed by life's responsibilities? Do you desire to reconnect with your true self? If this is you, then therapy may be a good option to help you gain a deeper understanding of your individual needs, patterns and limiting beliefs while becoming the person you were created to be. I believe that everyone holds the power to change, and like a seed that needs favorable conditions to thrive, personal growth must be nurtured and skillfully developed. My goal is to facilitate a trusting, and sometimes challenging but powerful partnership that supports your desire for positive change.

I next transitioned to working with substance use disorders, in an inpatient detoxification center & community outreach program, then for a national intervention and consultation company.
Effective therapy is a journey in which people identify the reasons behind their choices, then are subsequently able to make adjustments that better their health and optimize their strengths. As a therapist I hope to walk along side you as you explore your purpose for being and doing. The concept that drives my approach to therapy is that "We are generally the better persuaded by the reasons we discover ourselves than by those given to us by others." - Blaise Pascal. My primary areas of expertise include substance abuse, sleep issues, loss/grief, and mental health counseling to adolescents, adults, and families.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
