Cognitive-behavioral, emotionally focused, narrative and
somatic
therapy offer helpful tools, as do sex therapy and hypnosis.
We are convinced we have a problem. We're focused on it, worried about it, and it often feels like it defines us. These problems tend to show up or worsen during life and relationship transitions. Attending to what isn't working, as well as being intentional about addressing these problems, is necessary for change. Easily overlooked though, are the jewels - the opportunities hiding behind those problems. Psychotherapy provides a safe space for growth opportunities - offering compassion to those parts of ourselves we don't like or shame us, while allowing for the fluidity, flexibility and movement required for transformations.

I use cognitive (thought-focused),
somatic
(body-focused), emotion-focused, and psychodynamic approaches to promote more effective and satisfying ways of coping with life's challenges.
I am committed to helping people find relief and greater happiness. Twenty five years of experience as a psychotherapist confirms my belief in the power of understanding and the possibility of change. The fear of change can become the excitement of discovery; avoidance and running away can transform into assertiveness; holding back can give way to reaching out; confusion can crystallize into clarity and confidence; emotional pain can transform into patience and wisdom. Together, we can work to help you find the solutions and fulfillment you seek.

Many times we tell ourselves that we are not enough, or we are unworthy unless we are placing others first. This can lead to negative thoughts, low mood, insomnia, excessive worry and planning, or feeling on edge as you wait for the next difficulty to arise. In addition, it may feel like a never-ending battle of being overwhelmed and underappreciated in work and personal life. Now is the time to understand that you are worthy, it is okay to express your needs, and placing yourself first with therapy is a healthy path forward.

So many of us present a high-functioning face to the world, but our inner lives tell a different story. Depression, anxiety, and other issues are natural byproducts of the stressful lives we lead. I work with adults, teens (16 and older), couples, and families, ranging from adolescents facing developmental struggles to stay-at-home parents and Beltway professionals. As a native Northern Virginian, I can relate to the challenges of living in this frenetic environment. My previous military and consulting experience give me an understanding of issues that busy professionals deal with like self-care and work-life balance.

People often enter therapy during times of emotional pain, uncertainty or at a time when they are seeking more meaning in their lives. Each person has within them a powerful impulse toward growth and healing. I trust that impulse and trust the therapeutic relationship to reveal your strengths, wisdom, and the next steps to your growth and healing. There is something of value in even the most difficult circumstances. When these circumstances are approached with an openness to learning, major transformations can take place. I find that the willingness to look inside yourself is a key factor in your healing.

I specialize in working with people who never feel good enough, find themselves in the same dysfunctional relationship patterns, engage in self-sabotaging behaviors, self-criticism, and struggle to love and accept themselves. I care deeply about the therapeutic relationship. I believe it is sacred and meaningful, and the vehicle through which real change occurs. Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
