My practice is grounded in contemporary
psychodynamic
theory.
I appreciate, and am often profoundly moved by, the courage people bring to the work of therapy. I strive to honor your commitment by creating a safe and supportive environment that will allow you to learn ways to help alleviate your symptoms and move towards your goals. I see people with a variety of concerns: such as chronic sadness, anxiety, conflict in relationships, loss, life transitions, or a vague sense of being disconnected from one's true self or purpose in life. Therapy can expand your sense of yourself, deepen relationships, ease life transitions, and enrich your life in unforeseen yet exciting ways.

I utilize
psychodynamic
, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness techniques to help clients develop resilience, insights, and healthier lives.
So many of us present a high-functioning face to the world, but our inner lives tell a different story. Depression, anxiety, and other issues are natural byproducts of the stressful lives we lead. I work with adults, teens (16 and older), couples, and families, ranging from adolescents facing developmental struggles to stay-at-home parents and Beltway professionals. As a native Northern Virginian, I can relate to the challenges of living in this frenetic environment. My previous military and consulting experience give me an understanding of issues that busy professionals deal with like self-care and work-life balance.

I draw from a number of disciplines including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),
Psychodynamic
Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Sometimes taking a step back to assess and reflect on what is happening in your life is the crucial first step in making life-altering change. Doing so with a professional to help guide you can be incredibly helpful. I work with adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, life-changes, and more. I take a strengths-based and solution-focused approach to individual clients' problems and work to help them gain insight. I also love working with couples, especially in short-term pre-marital counseling.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
