For more than 20 years, I have helped adults, adolescents, and their families to improve their lives through counseling. From my perspective, counseling is a process in which client and therapist work cooperatively on mutually agreed goals, towards client's betterment and emotional health.

We all have places where we struggle. We all have behaviors or emotions that limit us in living our most fulfilled and joyous life. Sometimes we need help making changes.

If you’re considering therapy, chances are there are aspects of your life that aren’t going well. Maybe your relationships are unfulfilling. Maybe you’re having a hard time adjusting to a change or traumatic experience. Maybe you’ve been feeling down, on edge, defeated, or inadequate. Maybe you’re not even sure why, but you know you’re not as satisfied as you want to be. Therapy is a place where you can better understand the issues that are getting in the way of your happiness, explore options for a more fulfilling future, and get support as you contemplate change or adjust to a difficult reality.

Our careers and our sense of self are usually tightly linked, yet we don't always recognize this tie. This connection can have a big impact on how we relate to others in our lives. I would be honored to be your therapist as you navigate your personal or career challenges. Giving ourselves the space to explore and process our thoughts, feelings and needs is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves. Knowing we are not alone in this journey can be quite powerful.

In my evolving professional life over the last 14 years, I have combined therapeutic orientations that focus on addressing patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that lend insight and understanding to one’s present challenges or distress. When we were younger, how we learned to respond to the world around us might have had tremendous benefit to help us survive and move forward; now as adults, one may feel limited by repetitive emotional responses or thought processes and inflexible copying styles. Seeking therapy now may come at a time in your life when your relationships are struggling or you may feel a need for change.

My clients often face mental and emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-worth, grief, and life stressors. They may struggle with relationships or feel their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and circumstances have negatively impacted their well-being and quality of life. Seeking to process their experiences both verbally and creatively, they aim to build coping skills, solve problems, and find relaxation through art-making. I'm dedicated to making therapy accessible for neurodiverse clients and those with disabilities or chronic illnesses who may have felt stigmatized or faced barriers to mental health care.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
