My approach is strengths-based and collaborative, and I pull from a variety of therapy models including DBT,
attachment-based
, family systems, and narrative therapy.
I believe that everyone deserves a space to feel heard as they navigate in a new direction, away from feeling disconnected, stuck, and isolated. I will collaborate with you by helping you identify and shift negative or limiting perceptions, in order to create room instead for empowering perspectives that can better serve you going forward. I provide a safe, supportive, and warm environment as you begin to face whatever obstacles that initially brought you to therapy, and help you manage the conflicting feelings that often accompany this process.

Using
attachment-based
interventions, I help people establish safety, security, and stability in the world around them.
I work with couples, families, and individuals, but my true passion is relationships. After the initial "honeymoon period", couples may start finding themselves in complicated, emotional situations. Couples often begin to have disagreements, fights, unmet needs/wants, and hurt feelings start clipping away at the connections that were solid "in the beginning". After time, these situations start creating distance between the partners until.... it's over. The lack of working on the relationship, sadly, ends it.

We all need help at times to understand our feelings. Mindfulness-based therapy facilitates awareness, insight and the ability to plow into inner wisdom to heal self and reach one's full potential. Mindfulness experience increases an inner peace that remains present through life's challenges. The ability to facilitate change requires first acceptance of feelings, and thoughts. Mindfulness and compassion then facilitates change and new behaviors begin to emerge. The benefits include no longer being afraid, angry or anxious, life-skills improve resulting in a better understanding of goals and values and thus growth as an individual.

My particular strengths are dealing with adults with depression, anxiety, panic or fears and relationship issues. I have specialized training and expertise in working with couples (married, dating and divorcing) who are experiencing difficulties and/or dissatisfaction in their relationships. With more than 30 years as a therapist, I bring a depth of experience to help you deal with the conflicts of everyday life. Reaching out to receive help from a therapist is often a very difficult but very important first step. Sometimes, you experience problems that you do not feel you can handle alone. Many times we tell ourselves that we are not enough, or we are unworthy unless we are placing others first. This can lead to negative thoughts, low mood, insomnia, excessive worry and planning, or feeling on edge as you wait for the next difficulty to arise. In addition, it may feel like a never-ending battle of being overwhelmed and underappreciated in work and personal life. Now is the time to understand that you are worthy, it is okay to express your needs, and placing yourself first with therapy is a healthy path forward.

It can be a difficult decision to seek help when your life is feeling off track or stuck in patterns that are not serving you. Particularly in our current climate of increased anxiety and rising levels of depression, it’s crucial that you have a sense of comfort and emotional safety with the person with whom you work to explore the issues that confront you. I implement an individualized course of therapy for each client using a combination of psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral and relational techniques. I offer a free consultation in order for us to decide if I might be a good fit for you.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
