Making the decision to seek counseling is not always an easy decision. However, making that decision is the first tool in building your resilience to overcome current and future obstacles. I believe therapy is most beneficial when it is based on a collaborative therapeutic relationship that builds on individual strengths and my Person-Centered counseling style represents that.

I have spent my entire career working to help make the lives of others better. From working with the victims of Hurricane Katrina to working and serving the homeless in Washington, DC. The majority of my life has been spent in the service of others. I graduated from Liberty University with a master’s in Professional Counseling and a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling: Addiction and Treatment. I have learned to help effectively and efficiently those suffering from mental illness. I believe in treating the whole person, and sometimes that includes working with their families.

All who walk the journey of life come to hurdles, challenges, and moments of joy. It can become overwhelming when the hurdles and challenges appear to outweigh the moments of joy. Through working together, we can tackle the challenges of the past by allowing space to process what has occurred, learn from the past ,and move forward with increased awareness of the present moment.

Starting to explore our own behaviors can be scary. Creating a safe space and trusting relationship where people can deeply explore what is blocking them from enjoying their lives to the fullest is the utmost importance for healing. Every person's path is different and no one heals exactly the same. I work primarily (not limited to) clients who are seeking to work on issues related to trauma, depression, anxiety, and addictive behaviors. I have experience working with first responders, active duty/ veterans, medical professionals, pilots, nurses, counselors, and attorneys.

Working in the mental health field since 2008, I have had the opportunity to work with a a great diversity of populations in a wide variety of settings. Each clinical encounter has helped shape my present practice. Over time, I have learned much about humans, our fundamental need for connection and understanding, and our great potential for healing and growth. I have cultivated a practice based on forming and maintaining therapeutic relationships that hold space and allow for important personal work to be done. Recently much of my work has been with adults in transitional states, including new parents and college students.

The stress and challenges of daily life often feel harder if you are also experiencing feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, frustration and or depression. Developmental, relational or situational trauma can also alter or disrupt your sense of safety and functioning. Gaining a deeper understanding of your experiences and how they impact your life can help you develop coping strategies well as a deeper healing of the root cause.

Even strong, smart, successful people know when to utilize the help of experts. Maybe you’re not in crisis, just a couple in a “good enough” relationship, but some of the time things get painfully off track. Or an individual whose life seems to be going pretty well on the outside – but privately, you’re hurting. Sometimes, your ways of “getting by” turn into habits that need to be amended. It’s not always clear how to go about initiating change and it helps to have an objective perspective. Counseling is a great way to improve your life. Together we will explore, identify, and rebuild habits and patterns to provide lasting change.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
