Wendy W. Coates is a licensed marriage and family therapist who graduated from the University of California, Irvine, and the University of San Francisco. Wendy began her career in the juvenile justice system providing individual and group therapy to high-risk families. This setting was the foundation for her focus on treating domestic abuse, anger management, and trauma recovery. While living in California, she also worked as a psychiatric social worker providing acute in-patient treatment to individuals with mental illness, and as a family reunification therapist with Child Protective Services.

I specialize in working with children and adolescents ages 4 to 17 and have extensive experience treating anxiety, stress, depression, anger management, emotional dysregulation, grief, hyperactivity, low self-esteem, social skills, and symptoms associated with Autism. I strive to build connections through authenticity and offer a creative, calming, and nurturing environment. In my practice, I focus on treating the whole person which allows my clients to experience true self-expression, healing, and growth.

After graduating from NYU with a BSW and then an MSW, I continued on to work with individuals & families throughout my career. I received my license in clinical social work in 2009. I also have my certification to do supervision. My areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, couples & family therapy, ADHD, BPD, Bipolar Disorder, ASD & ODD. I use techniques from CBT, psychotherapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy, behavior therapy & client centered therapy. During the past six years a lot of my practice has been focused on couples counseling. It has been a wonderful experience helping couples work on communication & love.

Carissa is currently on maternity leave and plans to return to the office in May 2024. Carissa provides in-person sessions in Purcellville, Virginia and virtual therapy to those residing in West Virginia, Virginia, & Washington, DC. She enjoys working with adolescents, teens, & adults. Carissa uses light humor and warmth to connect with clients and create a safe place for their healing and self-discovery. She is trained in many evidenced-based treatments to empower clients to identify obstacles and build skills to achieve their goals. Modalities used in sessions are determined based on the needs of the individual.
