I offer therapy sessions in-person or online.
Hi, I’m Shumayl F. Hassan, a Resident in Counseling who believes that therapy is a space where your story is heard, your emotions are honored, and your growth is possible — at your own pace. I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, grief, intergenerational trauma, and the challenges of bicultural identity. As a South Asian therapist, I understand how culture, family expectations, and stigma can shape how we experience mental health.

All sessions will be conducted via tele-video (Doxy.me and VSEE) and/or in-person.
Understanding motivational difficulties can be complex;the primary causes underlying these difficulties are emotional in nature. Each day we expend a great deal of our energy modulating our mood to optimize our academic/profession and interpersonal experiences. Intervention involves the identification of emotional defenses that block the path of emotional health.

Waitlist for new clients
I've found my passion when working with children, adolescents, young adults and their families. I strive to provide a safe, supportive, and welcoming space where clients feel understood. I believe a strong client-therapist fit is essential for meaningful growth. Many emotional and behavioral concerns in children stem from underlying issues such as low self-esteem, complicated peer relationships, mood changes, and family stress. Since it's not always easy for parents to identify the root causes, I work collaboratively with children and caregivers to promote healing and postive change within the family system.

I offer Telehealth and In person therapy with limited evening hours.
Living life brings on many challenges that can be difficult to navigate from time to time. On occasions, we may feel stuck on our journey or lost and don't know which way to go. Troubles that arise in life, whether it be within the home, relationships, parenting, phase of life adjustment, or just prolong exposure to life's everyday stressful events and unanticipated circumstances, can lead to a kind of mental/self/spiritual erosion and before we realize it, we are crumbling beneath the weight and pressures of life.

I offer child therapy in-person and parent and adult sessions virtually.
As a Registered Play Therapist, I know all too well that Big Feelings can be a hard part of growing up, so I help children and parents navigate: anxiety, tantrums/meltdowns, anger, neurodivergence (ADHD, autism), trauma, self-esteem, friend or sibling conflict, major life changes, and grief/loss. Imagine if there was less fighting/yelling, meltdowns/outbursts, sadness, anxiety/stress, school calls about "incidents". Imagine if there was more frustration tolerance, cooperation, healthy communication, self-esteem, resilience, self-control, peace and calm at home, confidence in your parenting, and tools for supporting your child.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
