My journey with mental health has shaped who I am. While everyone's experience is personal, mine fuels my dedication to support others through their challenges. In a society that often misunderstands mental health, I strive to create a haven for self-discovery, reminding you that you're never alone. I hold a BA from Mary Baldwin University and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Eastern Mennonite University.

Hi, I’m Shumayl F. Hassan, a Resident in Counseling who believes that therapy is a space where your story is heard, your emotions are honored, and your growth is possible — at your own pace. I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, grief, intergenerational trauma, and the challenges of bicultural identity. As a South Asian therapist, I understand how culture, family expectations, and stigma can shape how we experience mental health.

Living life brings on many challenges that can be difficult to navigate from time to time. On occasions, we may feel stuck on our journey or lost and don't know which way to go. Troubles that arise in life, whether it be within the home, relationships, parenting, phase of life adjustment, or just prolong exposure to life's everyday stressful events and unanticipated circumstances, can lead to a kind of mental/self/spiritual erosion and before we realize it, we are crumbling beneath the weight and pressures of life.

I've found my passion when working with children, adolescents, young adults and their families. I strive to provide a safe, supportive, and welcoming space where clients feel understood. I believe a strong client-therapist fit is essential for meaningful growth. Many emotional and behavioral concerns in children stem from underlying issues such as low self-esteem, complicated peer relationships, mood changes, and family stress. Since it's not always easy for parents to identify the root causes, I work collaboratively with children and caregivers to promote healing and postive change within the family system.

As a Registered Play Therapist, I know all too well that Big Feelings can be a hard part of growing up, so I help children and parents navigate: anxiety, tantrums/meltdowns, anger, neurodivergence (ADHD, autism), trauma, self-esteem, friend or sibling conflict, major life changes, and grief/loss.
I use play therapy techniques with children that are the most developmentally-appropriate ways for them to process their feelings. My approach is tailored to your child's unique needs, preferences, age, and strengths. It also includes parenting/family work since my goal is to partner with you in your child’s treatment and support your parenting needs, too.

Often, adverse life experiences cause fear, anger, and confusion, which keep us from the very thing that will heal us: true connection with ourselves and one another.

I am working toward accreditation as a certified substance abuse counselor (CSAC). I am also certified in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)’s Criteria to help clients develop comprehensive treatment plans and learn skills to promote remission and prevent relapse. I am also trained as an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist (ADS) through the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA).

You know exactly what other people think—but struggle to tune into your own thoughts and make choices that reflect who you are. You “play it safe” in relationships or keep people at arm’s length. You find yourself caught in the same frustrating cycles with people you care about. Come think about where you are stuck with me! I use Bowen Theory to help people zoom out and see the bigger picture. This approach is a way of understanding how we’re shaped by the families and systems we’re part of—and how we can change the patterns by thinking more clearly and acting more deliberately.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
