Many people are simply seeking space to speak their truth, chart a path forward, and begin taking steps. My goal is to help adolescents and young adults thrive amidst stress, uncertainty, losses, and challenging transitions. Much of my clinical work involves supporting young Black leaders (highly involved teens, community organizers, professional managers, etc.) seeking respite to heal and just be - be seen, heard, and understood beyond the public gaze. Sometimes, clients come to counseling not knowing exactly what they want, but they feel like they want something different. That's a good place to start.

My goal is to empower clients and foster an environment that is supportive of personal growth and challenge areas of need. Are you struggling to reclaim your sense of identity? Experiencing a strained relationship? Or, feeling hopeless about the future for yourself and your children? Don't bear the weight of exhaustion, frustration, and direction alone! Trauma, codependency, borderline personality disorder, civilian life transitions, racial as well as faith trauma is taxing and demanding enough. We can focus on the emotional, mental, and physical struggles you personally face together in tandem.

I see people who are depressed, anxious, dual diagnosis, going through life changes such as divorce, grief and spiritual crisis. I have a small specialty in couples counseling, especially from a spiritual perspective and informed by the work of Dr. John Gottman. I am a former Roman Catholic priest (10 yrs.) and have been a licensed psychotherapist for 22 years. It is my conviction that everyone has the seeds of healing already within them and with the proper help those seeds can bear fruit. Initial appointments are about one to two weeks out.

I help clients to move beyond beliefs of self-hate and doubt to feelings of self-love and celebration. My clients improve their self-compassion while healing past pain, leading to deeper connection with the people in their lives. We develop strategies to replace old coping mechanisms that are no longer helpful or never were. I believe we are all more than the worst things we have ever thought about ourselves.

All of our behaviors are adaptive, even the ones we wish to change. There was likely a time and place that even the most pesky of habits helped to protect or get you through difficult times. We will explore the "when" and "why" of your past parts as we work to create change in the here and now. I appreciate life can be difficult, relationships overwhelming, and decision-making about major transitions both exciting and paralyzing. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress from work, relationship problems, or finding your voice, we can work towards your goals together.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
