Have you tried traditional talk therapy and felt like something was missing? Your subconscious mind is a vast rich source of emotional healing and transformation. Since your subconscious mind operates like an "auto pilot", using hypnosis can help you to absorb the information your subconscious mind needs to help you heal. Your subconscious mind wants to help you, but many times it doesn't understand what you really want, or how to give it to you, which is exactly why hypnosis can be extremely valuable tool to change your life for the better.

I can help you move forward through anxiety, sadness, "stuck" relationships, or past issues that keep getting in the way. Over 30 years of experience as a social worker has taught me that it takes a lot of courage to ask for help. I have great respect for anyone who has that courage. Most of us feel we can fix things ourselves and most of the time we probably can, but sometimes we feel completely overwhelmed by circumstances beyond our control. At such times, the expertise of a trained therapist can help us to find the strength to work through the issues that prevent us from taking the actions necessary to create fresh options and opportunities in our lives. I feel so lucky to be doing a job I love so much. I care deeply about helping people move beyond their perceived limitations to live a life that is deeply fulfilling and joyful.

Are you stressed, anxious, or depressed even though life seems great to others? Do you sometimes feel like your thoughts are controlling you instead of the other way around? Have you tried every suggestion and self-help book you could and nothing makes a big difference or lasts? If so, you are not alone and working collaboratively with you, I can help. I work with clients to increase their well-being, achieve goals, and better manage life's challenges. I know you have the innate capacity to heal old wounds and manage new difficulties -and by working together, we can renew those skills and install new, fresh, and effective ones. Healing comes from within but sometimes is elusive. The therapist's job is to provide direction, an objective ear, and compassion on the road to experiencing more freedom and joy in your life. I specialize in treating individuals who feel overwhelmed by the high stress of living in these demanding times either due to past trauma or current life challenges. Either way, I am here to collaborate with your best self and bring that self front and center. I provide HIPPA compliant online therapy as well after an initial visit for those residing in VA/MD.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
