I am passionate about sitting in the metaphorical darkness with clients, whether that is grief , trauma, depression, suicidal thoughts, self harm, life transitions, or questioning about identity. Together we will hold space to explore whatever struggles you may bring into the room. All genders, races, and sexual orientations are welcome. I am currently seeing adult clients who are located in Virginia in person or via telehealth services with a focus on college students and emerging adults, ages 18-29.

In a typical work week I may talk with people who are dealing with: loss and grief , life transitions, relationship concerns, communication and conflict, mother-daughter or father-son issues, depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, job dissatisfaction, or early conflicts underlying addictions.
In my work I make deep connections with people as we meet and talk honestly. Each person who meets with me seeks to find meaning and purpose in life. Part of this process is helping the unconscious and the conscious talk to each other because many of our inner conflicts, i.e. fights with ourselves, come from a lack of communication between the conscious and unconscious. A part of the work is exploring what lies in shadow. This is not just repressed, ugly stuff. For many folks untapped gifts and potential lie in the unknown parts of themselves.

I have over twenty years of experience working with loss , grief , abuse, trauma, depression and healing from a painful past.
Making a decision to start therapy changes your life. Whether you are facing challenges, coping with depression, grieving over the loss of a loved one or going through a transition, therapy can help. Therapy is time set aside just for you and your inner struggles. Our society sets you up to focus on everything except your sense of peace and emotional wellness. Meeting with a counselor allows you to grow, heal and regain a sense of well-being.

If you are trying to manage intrusive worries, sadness, or grief , it's possible your body and mind may be signaling a need for greater attention and care. Often this is our soul's way of asking for a deeper connection to ourselves and others. Reaching out for support requires courage and some willingness to be vulnerable. If you are ready, we will begin by developing a secure foundation based on identifying and honoring your strengths and resilience before exploring difficult topics. We will take an approach that includes a somatic awareness which invites you to notice what's rising inside your body, not just your mind.

Life can be challenging. Whether we’re falling apart, experiencing minor setbacks or even doing relatively well, it can be really helpful to have someone to talk to. I hold a strong conviction that there is no issue too big or small to justify seeing a therapist.

I work with a diverse range of people who are seeking healing or relief from emotional pain. My favorite part of this process is working with art and dreams to uncover hidden issues and blocks, to begin again to lead a full and happy life. A part of the work is uncovering the shadow and connecting the conscious with the unconscious, where not just difficult parts hide, but gifts and creativity. In a typical work week I talk with people dealing with mood disorder, depression, anxiety, feeling stuck, grief , trauma, and interpersonal issues.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
