The decision to pursue therapy is an important step. Working with the right therapist can be a valuable investment in yourself, and your relationships. As a psychotherapist, I believe the best results come from establishing a therapeutic relationship by getting to know you as a person - not simply as a cluster of symptoms - then tailoring interventions to fit your unique needs & strengths. I've been in the mental health field 25 years, and have worked with individuals, couples & families, treating a wide variety of clinical issues. I invite you to contact me with any questions, or to discuss your specific needs for therapy.

I believe that life is magic, and hard! The more support we have the better we can navigate its ups and downs. Growing up in rural Arkansas gave me a unique perspective that has evolved as I have relocated to Virginia, Philadelphia, Ireland and Connecticut, and most recently, back to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. I believe that being a parent is one of life's biggest challenges as well as one of its greatest joys. Whether trying to handle the effects of our own parents' parenting of us, or navigating the sometimes stormy waters as a parent of your own children, the more support you have, the better job you can do.

Are you struggling with treatment resistant depression, anxiety, or complex PTSD? You may have tried different therapists, therapy approaches, and medications, which allowed you to sometimes experience improvement to then have serious symptoms return. Or maybe you've never really had any significant relief and find yourself stuck in loops of avoidance, withdrawal, isolation, low mood, not enjoying anything, hyper arousal, disrupted sleep, panic, and struggling to connect with others. Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy may help you to make significant gains and maintain improvement longer.

I am an LCSW with extensive experience in trauma and attachment work and have a significant history working with children and their caregivers. I have taken a particular interest in working with caregivers who are experiencing perinatal mental health challenges. I believe in the power of connection: connection to one's own inner sense of self, connection between caregivers and their infants/children to build healthy attachment patterns, connection between couples in the midst of parenting, and the healing connection that can occur through therapy.

The signs are everywhere - your relationship is going nowhere. But you can’t bring yourself to say it out loud, let alone DO something about it. Each day gets a little worse. The only thing you’re getting better at is finding new ways to avoid the tension at home. Yesterday, you volunteered to stay a few extra hours at work. Today, you’re taking your child to a new dance class in the next town over. It’ll be a long day out of the house, but you’re taking on extra burdens for good reasons…right? Deep down, you know the truth - Staying busy just hides the pain and fear of what comes next. You’re just surviving minute by minute.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
