I am Stacie Davidson, a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in anxiety, depression, couples issues, mood disorders, personality disorders, and trauma. I have both professional and personal experience with how difficult, yet brave, it is to let go of the fear of judgment when coming into a counseling setting. My first goal of therapy with any client is to build a trusting relationship and a safe, non-judgmental space where they can feel free to explore, understand, and challenge themselves. I completed my Master’s Degree in Education and Mental Health Counseling.

In network with BCBS, but BCBS excludes marital therapy so all couples counseling is self pay.
Focusing primarily on relationships, sexuality and trauma; and starting with the belief that relationships are central to our well-being, I partner with clients to create a warm and safe space in which to explore patterns that impact growth. Therapy is not only to heal past hurts, but also to improve current/future functioning. I see psychotherapy as a joint and dynamic process between patients and clinician. My work is informed by Polyvagal & attachment theories; and pulls from a variety of evidence-based models including mindfulness, narrative therapy, EFT & Gottman approaches, among others. I am trained in EMDR & hypnosis.

Additionally, I completed my internship and further course work in Marriage and Family Therapy at the Denver Family Institute because of their reputation for the best clinical training in Colorado.
Hunter has merged his practice with Charlottesville Integrated Psychiatry and calls to him will be answered there. Hunter is certified in a style of therapy called Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). This style of therapy comes from an understanding that, just like our bodies heal from injury under the right conditions, our psyche heals under the right conditions as well. These right conditions are a felt sense of safety and connection with your therapist so that what is difficult and unresolved in your life can be re experienced in a new way that leads to healing and resolution of painful experiences.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
