I completed my Master’s Degree in Education and Mental Health Counseling.

So, you're looking for a therapist.... This is one of the most courageous things you can do. It's difficult to look at some names and faces and a paragraph or two of words, and try to decide which of them will be able to help you. But this is an important relationship, so take your time and look for that "goodness-of-fit" that will enable you to find your comfort. My goal is to ask my clients the questions that will help them find their answers. I believe that no one knows you better than you know yourself; oftentimes, there is too much clutter in our lives which can interfere with our ability to see clearly.

Hi. I'm Lisa Smith, a Clinical Social Worker. I like our therapy to be a time of creating what next steps you are willing to try. Together we think of the barrier. I act as a coach for accountability with awareness of any diagnosis or past struggles you've had. I highlight your strengths and together we celebrate victories. The therapy I use is research-based. I'll show you the logic and ease of following incremental steps. I will share the traits of your personality or diagnosis that are working for or hindering progress. When plans don't work, we begin again.

I'm extremely good at helping successful & results-oriented women & MEN who might otherwise NOT want to be in counseling feel comfortable.
Has it started to feel more like you are surviving life instead of living life? When stressors come from so many different directions, your life can start to resemble something you want to retreat from, not something you relish. It’s not surprising that you don’t feel like yourself, or maybe even actually like yourself, anymore. No wonder you spend more time in your head – your brain is probably desperately trying to find a way out of all this, a solution. Let me help. I show clients how they got here, as well as how to navigate a path out. Here, you can be honest about all the stickiest, raw parts of life and still feel valued.

Through a holistic and integrative approach I support individuals and families to navigate the unique challenges that life has unfolded for them. Whether our work takes place in my office or out in nature, I help my clients identify, cultivate and nourish their strengths and resources. Through our work my clients deepen their connection to themselves, others and the natural world. As these connections grow I support my clients to uncover limiting patterns that inhibit their relationships, creativity and happiness so they can nourish new ways of moving and relating in the world that support authenticity, ease, and joy.

I will collaborate with you to identify these patterns and make the changes that bring you greater health. I work with people in their late teens and beyond to address issues related to mood, relationships, life transitions and problematic behaviors.

I am Ann Bohr Benner, LCSW. I like to work with adults of all ages who are dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, and/or grief. We start with and come back to client goals. I think holistically about people who are in distress. Sleep, diet, relaxation, exercise, social support, and spiritual life all can contribute to change. Then self-awareness, insight, and intentional behavior change are important. I endeavor to create a safe space in which each person can be exactly where they are, and eventually, the natural inclination to heal and grow can flourish.

I work with teens and adults (13+). I work with individuals of all races, ethnicities, spiritual identities, and am LGBTQ+ affirming. I intentionally keep my private practice small because I want to be able to provide the best care for my clients. This means I am often unable to take clients that do not fit within my scope of expertise. I will not be a good fit for you if: 1)You have actively engaged in self-harm or suicide attempts in the past year. 2) You are struggling with substance abuse or addiction. 3) You are engaged in ongoing court or legal system involvement.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
