I use a blend of Trauma Focused CBT and EMDR (as desired) for PTSD symptoms while occasionally using parts work and portions of DBT.
Accepting new clients! I have spent the past 10 years working with adults struggling to overcome PTSD due to sexual abuse, medical trauma, car accidents, the death of a loved one, etc. I have worked with individuals and families as an outpatient counselor, intensive in-home clinician, and in a psychiatric facility. I have experience helping others decrease anxiety and depression, work through life changes, and increase healthy boundaries with others.

I believe in the human spirit and our capacity to make positive changes in all aspects of our lives, even in the face of adversity. By exploring our thought patterns, we can better identify feelings that affect our actions on a daily basis. We can then make effective changes that improve the quality of our lives, decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression and providing us with a more peaceful and joyful life. I also believe in the benefit of human interaction with other loving creatures; you will meet my little Yorkie-Poo therapy partner, Mojo, when you come to visit me. He loves children and adults.

Kappler Counseling is now live! Looking forward to serving people remotely and can't wait to connect with you! I am comfortable working with many different populations with varying levels of issues. Depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and military specific stressors are a small cross-section of the issues I treat. I am a sex-positive, kink informed and trauma informed clinician. I am a laid-back person with a robust, and admittedly sometimes immature, sense of humor who is a big believer in radical acceptance. You can expect these things, and many more during our sessions.

Maybe life has just become too overwhelming for you and you're trying to navigate through the peaks and valleys. Soliciting the help of others is not always easy. I use an integrative approach combining CBT to help you understand how thoughts influence emotions, DBT-informed techniques to develop coping skills, and EMDR to heal trauma.
You’re doing all you can, but it feels like you're unraveling. Maybe you’re stuck in anxious thoughts that won’t quiet down, haunted by past experiences, navigating a life stressor, or parenting a child whose struggles leave you feeling helpless. It’s exhausting holding it all together when your mind and body are asking for relief. It can also be painful to watch your child overwhelmed by big emotions they don’t understand -resulting in meltdowns or clinginess. Therapy can be a place to breathe again, understand the weight you're carrying, and begin to feel like yourself, stronger and more in control.

You've carried something heavy for a long time. Maybe it has a name — trauma, PTSD, loss — or maybe it's just a weight you've never been able to set down. You've kept going, kept showing up, kept surviving. But somewhere along the way, surviving started to feel like the ceiling instead of the floor. You don't have to stay there. And you don't have to walk through it alone. With 30 years of military service and a decade of clinical experience, I understand what it means to carry what others can't see — and I know the courage it takes to finally put it down.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
