Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious? Due to COVID-19, you might be experiencing even more worries about finances, the future, concerns about the health and safety of yourself, family and friends, and balancing home life with social needs. You may be experiencing a fast beating heart, sweaty palms, shortness of breath, racing thoughts, and/or
sleep
problems. When you feel emotionally exhausted, it can be hard to know what to do to alleviate those feelings. Whatever the cause or symptoms, there are ways to manage what you are going through. *No longer accepting new child or adolescent clients.

My specific areas of expertise include concerns in the field of Clinical Health Psychology, such as stress, chronic pain, headaches, and
sleep
treatment.
To say that life is hard is an understatement. There is no shortage of challenges that often lead to us feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, down, anxious, or hopeless. When these difficult emotions occur, we are often vulnerable to engaging in behaviors or making decisions that are not in line with the person we want to be. Therapy will help provide the tools you need to thrive (or, in some circumstances, survive) during these times in a space where you will be accepted, supported, and empowered. Therapy can also help you understand yourself more thoroughly in order to maximize enjoyment of life.

My clients experience relief from depression, anxiety, addictions,
sleep
issues, and other thought & mood issues.
So many of us present a high-functioning face to the world, but our inner lives tell a different story. Depression, anxiety, and other issues are natural byproducts of the stressful lives we lead. I work with adults, teens (16 and older), couples, and families, ranging from adolescents facing developmental struggles to stay-at-home parents and Beltway professionals. As a native Northern Virginian, I can relate to the challenges of living in this frenetic environment. My previous military and consulting experience give me an understanding of issues that busy professionals deal with like self-care and work-life balance.

Our experiences shape us, and it is healing to explore, identify, and understand the formative and relational dynamics that influence us in the present. Together, we can challenge or reaffirm core beliefs, process trauma, work through difficult patterns and triggers, and learn to recognize and safely feel emotions. I believe that the role of the therapist is to provide a safe base camp for an individual to discover a path to their own healing. I want to help you explore and find change through therapeutic connection and relationship.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
