My training has led me to practice in an integrative manner, drawing from a cognitive-behavioral framework to generate change based upon a deeper understanding using psychodynamic concepts and interpersonal techniques.
Congratulations on making it this far; searching for a therapist can be an overwhelming process, and the first step is often the hardest! Many individuals struggle with depression, anxiety, struggles with sex, or simply the desire to understand themselves more thoroughly. Whether to improve mood and functioning, improve relationships, or work on issues with sex/sexuality, therapy can be reparative, strengthening, and play a role in maximizing enjoyment of life! I work from an affirming and social justice approach with people who identify as LGBTQIA and people of color, and I am kink- and non-monogamy informed and affirming.

My graduate education, training and diverse professional background have shaped my understanding of psychodynamic psychotherapy for nearly 45 years.
As any mental health professional would know—especially a clinical psychologist with 35 years of experience—there are no ideal clients. All clients are imperfect, struggling to make sense of their emotional confusions, flaws and wounds. Each client seeks from therapy some form of healing and deeper understanding; but the process of doing so is unclear and uncertain. The psychotherapist role is to provide a safe, open and nonjudgmental relationship in which painful and often hidden personal issues can be explored and better understood. Then the challenges of taking small, fragile steps towards healing can be faced together.

Trauma and other adverse experiences can play a huge role in how we feel about ourselves and interact with the world around us. It can feel overwhelming to try to navigate this! An effective therapist both meets a client where they are at and helps to facilitate positive change. A therapist should create a safe and affirming space for a client to both process and problem-solve. I provide trauma-informed counseling from psychodynamic and behavioral lenses. I strive to embody cultural humility and a passion for social justice in my work. My goal is to partner with clients to help them develop insight and build more meaningful lives.

My integrated approach combines interpersonal, psychodynamic , acceptance and commitment, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based therapies based on the client’s needs.
When feelings of worry, irritability, sadness, anger or the curve balls life throws at you become overwhelming, they can begin to interfere with your ability to be fully present at home, work, or in your relationships. Sometimes these feelings may be related to current life stressors, or they may have deeper roots that make them feel harder to untangle. I can help you by providing a warm, safe, and non-judgmental environment to begin the process of self-exploration and healing .I am a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience working with adolescents and adults from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Although I use an integrative approach attuned to your needs, the theories I’m heavily influenced by are psychodynamic therapy, and mind-body connection therapy.
As a therapist I support client’s growth and unfolding, connection to self, and empowerment. I work with clients dealing with a history of complex trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and I have an interest in facilitating a more loving relationship within self and between people in relationship.

As a psychologist and psychotherapist, I have an integrative theoretical orientation, grounded in existential and humanistic psychology, drawing from psychodynamic , systemic, and cognitive-behavioral therapy approaches.
People often seek counseling or psychotherapy to change and to resolve difficulties or problems. Seeking consultation is personal and it takes some courage to initiate contact. Sometimes the impetus comes from within; sometimes your circumstances or others close to you provide a nudge. Finding the 'right' therapist for you may take some exploration. Some people simply seek to talk privately about a subject or an issue. This may involve one's direction in life, career, management role, or decision-making. Some people seek to address deeply personal thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, spirituality, or other concerns.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
