As a systemic and attachment-based therapist, I believe we are all looking for connection, belonging, and acceptance. However old we are – infant, child, teen , or adult – we need to make sense of what happens to us, inside of us, and in our relationships. Our life experiences shape us in profound ways; our sense of self, and how we manage emotions, respond to stress and connect with others. When life experiences are adverse, our body and brain can make meaning in ways that can cause distress. I help clients connect with their innate ability to change and heal difficult experiences so they can find peace and self-worth at any age.

In my work with teens and families, we identify healthy ways to process and cope with distress, supporting your teen to feel more confident and connected and less burdened by anxiety or low self-worth.
Our early family of origin experiences lay the foundation for internal and relational patterns that continue to play out in later life. Many of our patterns include our best and most creative efforts to adapt to the tough stuff of life such as trauma, misattunement, and loss. Though these patterns are not set in stone, they are often automatic and hard to recognize, change, or understand. Together we can explore the ways in which our adaptations may have served you well in earlier times but are no longer proving to be helpful, effective, or authentic. I work with clients to create connection, healing, safety, and satisfaction.

I specialize in treating anxiety and work collaboratively with the child/ teen as well as their parents.
It can be difficult under normal circumstances to know when to seek outside help for your child. If your child is experiencing distress or engaging in behaviors that are interfering with their ability to participate successfully in life, then you are on the right track in seeking additional support. I work in collaboration with children and the adults in their life to help target goal areas and provide practical support. As a licensed school psychologist I have a range of experience working with children-teens in support of their social, emotional, learning, and behavioral needs in private and public school settings.

In my practice, I welcome child (age 2+), parent-child, adolescent and adult clients to explore their strengths and difficulties within a creative, supportive and collaborative therapeutic space. I specialize in play therapy with young children with emotional, social and behavioral issues, developmental delays, anxiety, trauma, and adjustment issues, including moves and family changes. When working with young adults/adults, my training in developmental and child psychology informs my understanding of the whole person seeking help in the present. I strongly value the exploration of past experiences and patterns, and specialize in helping clients with traumatic backgrounds or early loss histories.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with experience working with clients in their teen years up to late adult years. If you are someone who is struggling with feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unfulfilled, therapy is a great place to explore those feelings and find ways to overcome and move forward. Often times feelings of depression, anxiety and self doubt can be brought on by stress, life transitions and a sense of not being fulfilled. My passion is to guide others on their own path to healing so they can live up to their true potential.

I have been working with youth and families for over 20 years. I believe each client is unique and deserves a tailored approach to treatment. My style is direct, compassionate and creative, allowing me to connect with clients that others have found difficult to reach. I often draw upon alternative interventions (equine therapy, recreation, sand tray, music, writing, and art) to reach clients resistant to more traditional forms of therapy. I wrote "Wild at Heart: Adolescents, Horses & Other Kindred Spirits" as a means for offering a helpful perspective and effective strategies for parents dealing with the challenging teen years.

Is your preteen or teen having problems at home or school (or maybe both)? Do you find that they are having trouble getting motivated, more irritable than normal, experiencing high levels of stress around social events or school, are struggling with confidence, or just spending all their time in video games or plugged in? They are not alone. Depression and anxiety have been on the rise across the board, but adolescents have been hit especially hard. This can be extremely frustrating as fights emerge over screen time, grades, or incomplete chores. Every day doesn’t have to be a struggle. We are here to help!

Are you concerned that your child is worrying too much or their sadness is overwhelming them? It is painful to see your child nervous, isolated, unhappy, and alone. You may be worried that your teen is hurting but they will not open up to you. You know your teen should be active and engaged in a social life but they spend most of their time at home or on their electronic devices. Maybe your home life has become stressful and consumed with conflict and stress. You are sure that therapy is a good idea but you have no idea on how to convince them to try it out.

I have worked with immigrant populations for nine years addressing issues that include trauma, domestic violence, parent-child relational, family reunification, at risk adolescent behavior, anger management, youth substance use, gang prevention, sex trafficking prevention, academic underachievement, anxiety, and depression.
For many immigrants, emigrating to the United States can be an exciting experience filled with anticipation, hope, and the start of a new chapter in their life. However, this experience can also bring with it challenges such as acculturative stress, anxiety, depression, and new and old trauma. At times, it is difficult to know how to address these challenges. Seeing a therapist is usually the first step to getting the support and guidance needed to successfully navigate stressors related to acculturation.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
