I use simple, attuned presence, along with concrete body-mind practices for trauma resolution and emotional distress, to access the healing that science proves is possible.
Accompaniment matters. Relationships transform. We sit together to access the health that is at the center of every human being, even when one of us can’t feel it. We sit because healing happens in relationship, access to true self is made easier in the presence of another person’s settled nervous system, and because your healing matters for the health of all of us. Whether you are facing overwhelm, anger, a frozen feeling, compulsions, depression, trauma , anxiety, or facing other difficult experience, we can touch it with awareness and respect. Our experience includes joy, includes pain, and includes connection and compassion.

If you are experiencing intense anxiety, relationship issues, depression, and/or just feeling stuck, change is possible. I believe that the relationship between client and therapist opens pathways to healing and clients can discover the truth of their own inner strength and resources. I would like to help you on your journey to explore, learn, and encourage movement towards greater self-awareness, deeper peace, and achieve more meaning and joy from relationships. To achieve these goals, I believe that a customized approach in therapy is most effective in helping people make positive changes in their lives.

My understanding of trauma and oppression has been strongly influenced by the movements for social justice.
I have explored the mind-body connection since 1980. I use healing and recovery models of therapy that respect my clients' strength and potential. I specialize in gentle and supportive methods of assisting clients to overcome the recurrent effects of trauma . I have advanced training and experience with mind/body modalities including EMDR to facilitate healing and foster posttraumatic growth. This generally involves helping a client learn to manage the recurrent symptoms of trauma and concurrently address and heal from the cause.

My specializations include relationships/attachment, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, trauma , shame, life transitions, and ultimately, finding more fulfilling ways of living a fully-engaged life.
Problems are not "just in our heads." Problems affect our bodies, too. We respond to them through our thoughts, feelings, and actions. I believe that "talk therapy" is important. I also believe it is important to work beyond this modality in order to give people an opportunity to integrate cognitions, feelings, and the body. This allows people to release old patterns so they can act on experiences in new, more effective ways - and change becomes possible.

My past experiences of working with at-risk populations has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of trauma on an individual. While I support clients with a wide range of traumatic experiences, I consider myself an ally of survivors of sexual trauma in particular; I understand the pain and confusion that people experience and the many ways in which these experiences impact one's mental health. I hold an accepting, welcoming environment so we can work together through these past experiences to help you find peace in the present.

I focus on individual Trauma , Couples, and Family. With years of family and individual work I've developed a flexible ability to meet adult and teen needs from parenting, marital, to trauma and developmental transitions of life. My work is informed from an attachment approach where I seek to create safety with you to untie negative relational patterns and move into greater awareness and courage. I assist you in rediscovering your resiliency to pull you beyond the old patterns. To assist my clients when balance is upset by an underlying issue of trauma , my training in AEDP coupled with EMDR and somatic approaches is well suited.

For 20 years, I have worked to support folks in finding and building on their existing strengths so they can better manage the impacts of anxiety, abuse, neglect, trauma , grief and loss, parenting, relationship issues, life transitions and everyday stressors.
Our first focus will be to build a relationship in which you feel safe and connected. Then we'll find a pace of working together that allows us to pay attention to what’s working well for you and what's getting in your way. This early joining creates a solid ground from which we can work together to help you increase your awareness, accept and trust yourself, explore your needs, build and strengthen skills, and settle yourself when facing a difficult time.

Most of my clinical training was at VA hospitals in Palo Alto, CA and Asheville, NC, treating post-traumatic stress and substance use disorders.
I am a firm believer in evidence based treatments and have extensive training and practice in such. That being said, I recognize that "evidence" is usually based on outcomes of clinical trials with very controlled environments where very specific populations with very specific diagnoses are treated. Thus, I find that I am most effective when adapting, integrating and tailoring treatments to my clients' individual needs.

I also explain how everyday experiences can become embedded in our brains as trauma .
I provide a warm and nurturing environment where clients feel safe to explore their deepest inner selves. Whether addressing adult or parent-child issues, I emphasize the importance of working on one's own emotional and nervous systems as a first step to creating change. My intention is to help people "heal", not just "deal". I use talk therapy and experiential techniques such as Gestalt, Somatic Experiencing, and mindfulness practices. I have found that working with deep emotions embedded in the "felt sense" of one's experience is a powerful tool leading to transformation.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
