My background in somatic psychology, ecotherapy and expressive arts allows me to offer talk therapy as well as experiential modalities such as movement, art, adventure and nature therapies.
Through a holistic and integrative approach I support individuals and families to navigate the unique challenges that life has unfolded for them. Whether our work takes place in my office or out in nature, I help my clients identify, cultivate and nourish their strengths and resources. Through our work my clients deepen their connection to themselves, others and the natural world. As these connections grow I support my clients to uncover limiting patterns that inhibit their relationships, creativity and happiness so they can nourish new ways of moving and relating in the world that support authenticity, ease, and joy.

My practice integrates the wisdoms of Eastern and Western psychology with foundations in meditation, attachment theory, somatic awareness, and modern neuroscience.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 15+ years of experience. I provide a welcoming space for clients experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, stress, relationship struggles, and life transitions. I believe that the shift from judgment to understanding with compassion-based awareness is the core of healing and change. I support clients to work skillfully with difficult emotions, soften to themselves and others, and reconnect with the capacity to problem-solve constructively. My approach guides clients to deepen insight, see options clearly, and transform the boundaries, narratives, and habit loops that so often keep us stuck.

I provide a warm and nurturing environment where clients feel safe to explore their deepest inner selves. Whether addressing adult or parent-child issues, I emphasize the importance of working on one's own emotional and nervous systems as a first step to creating change. My intention is to help people "heal", not just "deal". I use talk therapy and experiential techniques such as Gestalt, Somatic Experiencing, and mindfulness practices. I have found that working with deep emotions embedded in the "felt sense" of one's experience is a powerful tool leading to transformation.

If you are trying to manage intrusive worries, sadness, or grief, it's possible your body and mind may be signaling a need for greater attention and care. Often this is our soul's way of asking for a deeper connection to ourselves and others. Reaching out for support requires courage and some willingness to be vulnerable. If you are ready, we will begin by developing a secure foundation based on identifying and honoring your strengths and resilience before exploring difficult topics. We will take an approach that includes a somatic awareness which invites you to notice what's rising inside your body, not just your mind.

I'm in intermediate training with Somatic Experiencing.
If you're seeking healing, peace, and wholeness through a stronger sense of self, you're in the right place, and I'm glad you're here. I work with adults who experience anxiety and trauma responses. In a world that is constantly filling your head with expectations and ideas of who you “should” be, I want to help you quiet the noise and become unapologetically you. My clients tend to be people who question their worth and experience feelings of shame, fear, and doubt. I have a passion for working with women, college students, high achievers, and creatives. Often, my clients experience tension or hold stress in their body.

Through use of mindful somatic awareness, practical coping skills, expressive and nature-based approaches, guided meditations, and an inter-generational lens, we can identify root issues and work together to heal.
Whether you have a list of 20 things you want to work on, or you have a sense that you’d like support but can’t quite identify why or how, we can work to identify and explore together. I use a client-centered, experiential, strengths-based approach. As a therapist, I love helping folks integrate their parts of selves and attune to their inner sense of direction. Together we can use a whole self approach that values all the parts of you: mind, body, and spirit.

My work is shaped by psychodynamic and somatic approaches.
I offer individual therapy for adults and adolescents, and specialize in working with women and teens dealing with the impact of sexual assault, childhood abuse, or other trauma. Other areas of clinical interest include relationship issues, life transitions, anxiety, and identity questions. I believe therapy is a collaborative process that allows us to be deeply seen and heard, and to see ourselves in new and transformative ways. It can build self-esteem and strengthen our sense of who we are and how we fit into the world. As we understand ourselves more fully, relationships with others become richer and more fulfilling. Therapy can strengthen our ability to adapt and adjust to the changing circumstances of our lives, freeing us up to respond more flexibly to the world around us and to experience a more enlivened way of being. For trauma survivors who experience overwhelming waves of shame and fear, a lurking sense of unease, or confusing physical sensations, therapy can help calm the mind and the nervous system, allowing you to move from reliving the past to feeling grounded, present, and whole in mind and body.

I offer integrative counseling focusing on trauma healing, somatic expression, EMDR, and Reiki/energy work.
YES! I have openings… As a trauma survivor you can feel emotionally torn and mentally defeated. It may seem like every relationship you find becomes painful and toxic, and every moment you're reminded of your trauma. You just want to feel safe in your body, connected in your relationships, and inspired in your life. Maybe you're cautious about getting help because revisiting painful memories seems scary and vulnerable. As the only PhD Certified Trauma Counselor in the Shenandoah Valley, I will teach you how to identify your psychological and relationship blocks, and develop new ways to overcome and experience Post-Traumatic Growth.

Problems are not "just in our heads." Problems affect our bodies, too. We respond to them through our thoughts, feelings, and actions. I believe that "talk therapy" is important. I also believe it is important to work beyond this modality in order to give people an opportunity to integrate cognitions, feelings, and the body. This allows people to release old patterns so they can act on experiences in new, more effective ways - and change becomes possible.

I have explored the mind-body connection since 1980. I use healing and recovery models of therapy that respect my clients' strength and potential. I specialize in gentle and supportive methods of assisting clients to overcome the recurrent effects of trauma. I have advanced training and experience with mind/body modalities including EMDR to facilitate healing and foster posttraumatic growth. This generally involves helping a client learn to manage the recurrent symptoms of trauma and concurrently address and heal from the cause.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor for many years, I am continually inspired by the transformative moment that happens in the counseling process. There is a sacredness in being present to another as a guide on this journey we call life. Whether it is exploring inner resources for healing and growth or the possibilities for deep and lasting change, it is an honor to work with people that are desiring a better way to be themselves in the world. My own journey has taught me that being truly present and engaged allows space for the unknown to be revealed, acknowledged, and eventually integrated into the service of the whole self.

It's hard for anyone to talk about personal issues. Anyone brave enough to do this launches themselves into a life giving process that increases the possibilities of their lives forever. It brings about unbelievable changes opening possibilities never thought of. It's hard work. It's scary. But it teaches one to live effectively with what life has brought and create changes that enhance the life that is. It's a journey into the good and the bad that takes a person to new heights. It's an exploration that creates love and light in a life.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
