I have a LICSW in Washington DC and an LCSW in the Commonwealth of Virginia. My approach is to provide tools for your success. I have been doing therapy since 1986 (yes I am old). I understand we all have times we need support. I do this to help others when they feel down or need a place to see where they are and assist in helping them find their desired path.

I provide couple counseling both in person and online. The majority of my clients are ready to continue to grow, both as individuals and in their relationships, but are finding that old patterns might be getting in the way. My goal as a clinician is to balance emotional validation and safety with action-oriented approaches.

Life is not easy, and problems are never simple. In my view, therapy is offering guidance and support to ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances. Together, we will work to make the changes that are most important to you. I use a collaborative approach, working to fully understand the issues that you are facing. My goal is to create a safe space leaving you with no doubt that you are heard and valued. I provide the necessary support allowing you to face the overwhelming, and often daunting, life circumstances that you may not have been able to address on your own.

Traveling down a road alone can leave us feeling lonely, unprotected, unsafe, and unvalidated: as if we must face the world and the unknown alone. Through the counseling process, we can build a safe space to explore and journey beyond the dark times in our lives and work to bring light and color back to the dark areas that I believe are designed to help us grow. Counseling is a journey and a process: one that you do not have to walk alone. As a Resident in Counseling, I aim to walk with you and help you to use your strengths to overcome the challenges in your life.

Hunter has merged his practice with Charlottesville Integrated Psychiatry and calls to him will be answered there. Hunter is certified in a style of therapy called Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). This style of therapy comes from an understanding that, just like our bodies heal from injury under the right conditions, our psyche heals under the right conditions as well. These right conditions are a felt sense of safety and connection with your therapist so that what is difficult and unresolved in your life can be re experienced in a new way that leads to healing and resolution of painful experiences.

I offer therapy & evaluation (testing) services for those 18+. Clients don't come to me because they are happy. They come, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving forward again.

My work is focused on all types of addictive behaviors, especially the use and abuse of substances. An Addiction is simply the use of something outside of ourselves to change the way we feel inside. I help individuals cope with their Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders by using an eclectic array of theories. CBT and EMDR are extremely effective in treating addiction disorders, but I use whatever techniques are required to help individuals overcome their addiction and face the underlying issues that are being medicated by their behaviors. I received a Masters in Community and Addictions Counseling from William & Mary in 2000.

Therapy has as its fulcrum a secure, connected, trustworthy relationship. Within this safe zone there is opportunity for discovery, healing, questioning, empowerment, questioning, and goal-setting. I see therapy as an open-ended, yet purposeful opportunity for all of these, and more. I strive to help clients explore and expand their sense of themselves, and to live and relate authentically, both in relationships and in vocation. I have a gentle, affirmative clinical presence, at points serene and curious, at others interactive, with humor as an adjunct.

Anxiety can feel overwhelming. Trying to manage worry, panic attacks, or obsessive compulsive disorder can be challenging. You may find that the harder you try, the more you fight, the worse it gets. Well meaning friends and family members may try to help by offering advice of their own: Don’t worry about it. Think about something else. Just try to relax. Unfortunately these suggestions are rarely helpful. The truth is, anxiety can be managed. The solutions, however, are often counterintuitive.

I work with individuals and couples to help them actualize their innate qualities of goodness and wholeness. I support people who are overwhelmed with stress, anxiety, or depression, in order to help them learn to transform their life challenges into opportunities for healing and growth. Individuals and couples will learn to recognize behaviors that keep them stuck and are provided with tools to help them process difficult emotions and connect and communicate more effectively and lovingly. Through establishing a caring therapeutic relationship clients can become more confident and secure within themselves.

I am different from most therapists in that I offer solutions early in the therapy process and I give advice. I tend to work well with people who want to get better, but are not necessarily excited about seeing a therapist - or who have not benefited from therapy in the past. It is very valid to seek out a therapist simply for support. It is what a lot of people need. But it is difficult to find a therapist who will help you understand what is perpetuating your problems in a clear and actionable way - and who will offer evidence-based interventions to make your life better as soon as possible so that you can live a happier life.

I grew up with curiosity and befuddlement in equal measures. Only in college did I begin to trust in my ability to think and pursue a path that led to graduate work and training as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). Those training experiences included service as a hospital chaplain and the personal oceans of grief and loss. As an intern at a Veterans Administration's behavioral health clinic, and how war and chronic mental illness crossed paths daily to challenge patients, already isolated, even in their own families.
