Hello! I'm Ames, a clinical social worker offering virtual and in person sessions in Charlottesville, Virginia. As a therapist, I actively work to decolonize my practice and challenge the ways social norms and inequities can limit the care that providers offer our communities. I believe that my job is to support you on your path to authenticity, joy, and wellness. In session, I incorporate gentle challenges and humor to build a therapeutic relationship that fosters growth and self-reflection. I recognize how harmful systems can impact our mental health, and I believe we have the ability to offer ourselves compassion and action.

I work with adults navigating ADHD, narcissistic abuse, divorce, life transitions, relationship challenges, and addiction. People who are doing everything "right" but still feel stuck or disconnected. Maybe work is fine but the rest of life feels impossibly hard. Sleep struggles, persistent anxiety, the weight of relationship conflict, stagnant sex and intimacy. I help people understand not just how to manage their symptoms, but what's actually driving them. As someone with ADHD myself, I know what it's like to wonder why managing all the pieces is so hard. Therapy isn't just about coping better. It's about what's underneath.

You’re used to carrying it all on your own. But lately, the weight of navigating transitions, past trauma, or constant stress has started to feel like too much. You don't have to have it all figured out to be here—in fact, therapy is the one place where you don't have to 'perform' at all. As a relational therapist, I believe healing happens when you feel truly seen and supported. Our work is a collaboration where we move at your pace.

As a music therapist, I find meaning in analyzing lyrics. One of my favorite artists, Mac Miller, wrote " We on the same trip, we just got different baggage." In the "trip" of life, we often strive for the same things: happiness, healthiness, success, and connection. However, the "baggage" we carry or the obstacles we face on that road are not always the same, whether it's anxiety, depression, trauma, interpersonal issues, and more. The road is never easy, so it's always helpful to have a someone in the passenger seat, aiding you in the journey to your destination.

The journey of healing begins with that moment of understanding that you, your child, or your family are ready to find a new way to live. Whether the struggle is living with trauma, neurodivergence, behaviors that create chaos, family or relationship conflict, managing "big" feelings and emotions, or are questioning if you can feel anything at all, therapy is an opportunity to uncover the source, recover from the pain, and discover who you (or your child, family or partner) are and meant to be.

As an existentially-minded therapist, I am deeply committed to helping people find peace of mind, particularly as they navigate grief and end-of-life transitions. I understand the profound challenges of modern life, recognizing that many experience rushed living, lack of acceptance, and anxious or depressed moods, which can lead to unnecessary suffering, especially during times of significant loss and change. I am particularly attuned to the delicate and often overwhelming emotions associated with grief and loss, guiding individuals and families with compassion as they navigate these profound life passages.

My approach to therapy begins with forming mutual trust. I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship, the right 'fit', and that a foundation of support and connection can empower you to explore your past and understand how it is impacting your 'now'.

Jewish Therapists
Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?
As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?
No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?
A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?
The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
