I am currently forming a Men's Separation/Divorce Support Group. I work with people who are struggling with a range of problems and wish to better understand their thoughts, feelings and behavior; they might be at a crossroads and want help thinking about the impact of a significant change on self and others. I am experienced working with people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds as well as LGBTQ+ individuals. I'm compassionate and non judgmental and tailor my work to each patient's needs. I received my PhD from Yale University and have worked in community clinics, hospitals and extensively with UVA students and faculty.

I use IFS as a means of understanding and working with parts of Self that think or act in unhelpful ways, body-centered practices, EMDR, and other techniques that help clients develop the capacity to move through the world with greater ease and joy.
I believe that all people have the innate capacity to heal from painful experiences, adapt to difficult situations, alter unhealthy behavior, and find true happiness. Sometimes, however, we need help developing this capacity or clearing the obstacles that prevent us from accessing our most capable Self. This is when therapy can help. In my many years of providing therapy to a wide range of people struggling with a variety of challenges, I have found that bringing a kind, curious and accepting presence to bear on difficulties (and with ourselves for the ways we have tried to cope) creates the container in which change can occur.

Our minds can make us better or they can create tremendous problems. Can you use your mind to reduce your suffering, rather than increase it? Or to increase meaning and depth in your life? Sometimes a sympathetic family member or wise friend can help a great deal; other times a knowledgeable, compassionate professional is a better choice. Perhaps your internal life feels out of control, or you're feeling stuck, repeating ineffective patterns of relating to yourself and others. I work with people to help them understand themselves and their situation, manage stress better, and make positive changes happen.

When appropriate, I also integrate EMDR to help process difficult experiences in a safe, structured way.
Do you feel weighed down by anxiety, past hurts, or stress that makes it hard to move forward? Maybe you’ve been coping the best you can—juggling relationships, parenting, or life transitions—but inside, it still feels like too much, or simply not quite right. My first priority is creating a safe, connected space where you don’t have to carry it all alone. We’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, noticing what’s helping while gently exploring what’s getting in the way. Together, we’ll build awareness, strengthen your inner resources, and move toward a way of living that feels more grounded, easeful, and authentic.

CBT and EMDR are extremely effective in treating addiction disorders, but I use whatever techniques are required to help individuals overcome their addiction and face the underlying issues that are being medicated by their behaviors.
I've worked as a full-time therapist at the Farley Center, working in both the Thirty-Day and Long-Term Treatment Programs, Program Manager/Director at Region Ten’s Dual Recovery Center (DRC) and Director of the Mohr Center. I am currently Clinical Director at Orchard Mountain Recovery IOP where I facilitate Group Therapy and conduct Clinical Assessments.

I use mindfulness, existential-humanistic, acceptance/commitment, CBT, EMDR, narrative, and Gottman Method techniques to help individuals achieve their desired results.
While we possess many innate tools to cope effectively with adversity, there are many factors that can serve as barriers to achieving and maintaining a healthy balance in life. Whether these barriers relate to internal processes or external circumstances, I believe that it is often beneficial for us to practice vocalizing our experience to others. Doing so can serve as a protective factor, helping us to cope more effectively with any radical internal monologues that may pop up from time to time.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I am continually inspired by the transformative moment that happens in the counseling process. There is a sacredness in being present to another as a guide on this journey we call life. Whether it is exploring inner resources for healing and growth or the possibilities for deep and lasting change, it is an honor to work with people that are desiring a better way to be themselves in the world. My own journey has taught me that being truly present and engaged allows space for the unknown to be revealed, acknowledged, and eventually integrated into the service of the whole self.

It's hard for anyone to talk about personal issues. Anyone brave enough to do this launches themselves into a life giving process that increases the possibilities of their lives forever. It brings about unbelievable changes opening possibilities never thought of. It's hard work. It's scary. But it teaches one to live effectively with what life has brought and create changes that enhance the life that is. It's a journey into the good and the bad that takes a person to new heights. It's an exploration that creates love and light in a life.

I also enjoy working with older teens and adults, and I find EMDR a useful modality to include no matter the age of the client.
I appreciate working with clients (or parents of clients) who are motivated to make positive changes. If you're seeking reflective support, I may not be the best fit for you. But if you're committed to exploring painful patterns that cause you distress and you're ready to address blocks and habits that no longer serve you, I'm your girl.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
