As a strengths-based and trauma-informed therapist, I am passionate about helping clients to repair deeply held wounds, especially relational wounds, which are often at the core of symptoms such as depression , anxiety, and addictive behaviors. Though I work with clients to help alleviate their troubling symptoms, my work is more fully anchored in the belief that the sensitive exploration of underlying injuries enables not just symptom-reduction but transformation and growth.

Clients coming to see me are generally in one of three categories: 1) People who are unhappy and know why. They have experienced loss, mistreatment, oppression, trauma, major illness, discrimination, or other experiences that they identify as the source of their distress. 2) People who are unhappy and don't know why. They may feel depressed , anxious, or dissatisfied with their lives and not know the reason. 3) People who feel okay but want to come to life more fully and feel even better.

I specialize in anxiety and depression and strive to help people develop healthier coping skills while decreasing their symptoms.
I’m so glad you’re here. We all pursue therapy for different reasons. Sometimes we need an objective person to talk through our problems with, sometimes we are experiencing depression and anxiety and need help developing ways to manage and cope with symptoms, and other times we just need a safe space to be ourselves; but whatever brought you here I’m glad you are taking the first steps in seeking help. I know how scary and overwhelming life can feel sometimes. I am a big believer in the power of our thoughts. If we can learn to change or challenge our thoughts, we change how we feel and how we act.

I have experience (not limited to) people who are depressed , anxious, have grief, feeling overwhelmed, low self-esteem and in crisis.
THIS IS TELEHEALTH ONLY. One of the best decisions you can make in your life is to reach out and ask for help. Therapy is about change and trying to figure out the old patterns that are not working anymore. As a parent of school-aged children and working in the mental health field, I recognize that people have been struggling. If you were struggling pre-pandemic I realize that COVID may have exasperated your feelings, your mood, and may have increased anxiety. I would like to be able to help you manage your struggles and develop a new way of life going forward.

I work with a diverse population experiencing various disorders and concerns including anxiety, depression , trauma, relational and adjustment challenges, grief and loss, family problems, and addiction.
Welcome! Beginning therapy is a courageous step in the healing process. I have seen firsthand the transformative results of psychotherapy. I practice counseling from a relational depth perspective. This means focusing on the relationship I build with clients as a cornerstone of treatment and working with the unconscious, which is the root of most distress. I help clients work through symptoms which are causing conflict in their lives, keeping them from achieving their goals, and preventing them from feeling a sense of overall well-being.

People often seek out therapy when they are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or alone. These feelings may cause symptoms of anxiety, depression , difficulty managing anger, or dependance on food or substances to cope. As a therapist I enjoy creating a relationship that is warm, consistent, caring and safe to explore difficult feelings or experiences while figuring out what symptoms like anxiety, or depression are trying to tell us. Having someone who understands the way you think and feel can be truly transformative. This process can lead to the rediscovery of your own innate constructive forces, bringing relief and much needed change.

You might be feeling "stuck in present pain" (that can be depression ) or feeling "fear of future pain" (that can be anxiety).
I offer therapy and evaluation (testing) services. Clients don't come to me because they are happy. They come, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving forward again. I can help you.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
