In my practice, I do therapy with families and individuals of all ages. I also conduct comprehensive psychological evaluations of children , adolescents, and adults, including testing for learning disorders, ADHD, developmental disorders (e.g., Asperger's Disorder and autism), anxiety and mood disorders (e.g., depression, bipolar disorder), and personality disorders. Through my evaluations, I try to help individuals (or in many cases, children 's parents and teachers) to understand what is interfering with them living a more successful and happy life. My goal is not to merely identify 'problems,' but also to map solutions via concrete and individualized recommendations.

I specialize in family, couples, and individual therapy for children and adults. I believe that, within the context of a supportive relationship, people can understand their problems in new ways and learn skills towards leading healthier and more fulfilling lives. I utilize a strengths-based approach that incorporates cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and systemic interventions. People see the most change when doctors, psychologists, teachers, and other players are working together. Thus, with your permission, I consult with others in order to better understand the problem and provide solutions that expand beyond the therapy room. When appropriate, I will be your advocate.

I provide a warm and nurturing environment where clients feel safe to explore their deepest inner selves. Whether addressing adult or parent- child issues, I emphasize the importance of working on one's own emotional and nervous systems as a first step to creating change. My intention is to help people "heal", not just "deal". I use talk therapy and experiential techniques such as Gestalt, Somatic Experiencing, and mindfulness practices. I have found that working with deep emotions embedded in the "felt sense" of one's experience is a powerful tool leading to transformation.

I offer support that makes sense of challenging and confusing behaviors, and results in strategies that reduce problematic interactions and strengthen the parent/ child relationship.
I work with people struggling to resolve feelings of anxiety or sadness, or those who find that relationship challenges seem to keep repeating themselves. Together we embark on a journey of discovery to identify and understand the patterns operating below awareness that inform expectations, and color perceptions. Whether working with adults, adolescents, couples or caregivers, I believe therapy should be an engaging and dynamic process where all thoughts and feelings are welcomed. Healing occurs when we allow ourselves the freedom to express the scope of our emotions, and my sessions are as likely to include laughter as tears.

In addition to my work with elementary age children identifying processing strengths and weaknesses that impact learning, I have extensive experience with adolescents.
I have over 40 years of experience working as a school psychologist in K-12 settings. My expertise is in psycho-educational assessment to identify learning difficulties (in reading, writing and math), ADHD, and socio-emotional/behavioral difficulties that impact academic performance. These results form the foundation for accommodations and interventions that enable students to learn at their potential. Psycho-educational assessment measures cognitive abilities while identifying processing strengths and weaknesses, which enhance our understanding of students’ needs in the learning environment.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
