I offer a genuine connection to my patients, which I believe to be the heart of psychotherapy. Each individual is unique, and so is their purpose in seeking therapy. I prioritize the relationship with individuals above any tool, or technique. As a result, I have seen my patients change and have witnessed their transformation.

THIS IS TELEHEALTH ONLY. One of the best decisions you can make in your life is to reach out and ask for help. Therapy is about change and trying to figure out the old patterns that are not working anymore. As a parent of school-aged children and working in the mental health field, I recognize that people have been struggling. If you were struggling pre-pandemic I realize that COVID may have exasperated your feelings, your mood, and may have increased anxiety. I would like to be able to help you manage your struggles and develop a new way of life going forward.

I enjoy helping people establish and maintain relationships. It could be a relationship with your significant other, colleagues, or your family where values, beliefs, expectations, or even the cultures may be different. I also help people maintain a positive relationship with themselves by achieving an internal balance and being at peace with their past experiences.

Therapy often focuses on life’s biggest challenges and difficult emotions, but that doesn’t mean therapy has to be a distressing experience. I work with adolescents and adults who are experiencing depression, anxiety, adjusting to life changes, addiction, and PTSD. I specialize in treating trauma and utilize Cognitive Processing Therapy to guide individuals through reprocessing what they have experienced in order to cultivate healing and growth from their traumas. I have helped survivors of a wide variety of traumatic events including but not limited to; sexual assault, childhood abuse, combat related trauma, and domestic violence.

I believe that biology, experience and environment affect how we live in and experience the world. If you are struggling to live to your fullest, we can explore your challenges by creating a safe space to slow down and explore why. You will learn to listen to what your body and mind are telling you by learning to recognize negative beliefs, negative patterns, and unhealthy relationships and begin to make the changes you deserve.

I am trained in EMDR for relief of trauma and both behavioral and psychodynamic/talking therapies which emphasize positive habits, good health and personal insight. Any change starts from within and sometimes we all need another perspective to grasp the whole picture so that problems or obstacles can be sensibly, sensitively and effectively handled. I work from a strengths-based orientation whereby the talents, skills, and interests can be identified. So we go from there, to where the individual learns to utilize those strengths in resolving problems, conflicts, stressors as well as finding sources of comfort, competence and confidence.

My style is interactive, behavioral, and usually short-term. I'm curious about where and how clients get stuck in running their lives, solving their own problems. I focus on helping clients break dysfunctional patterns, take acceptable risks, and approach problems in a more flexible way. There's homework and new behaviors to try during the week. I have written 13 books on couple & family therapy, anxiety, depression & anger, brief therapy, clinical supervision, as well as over 300 articles. I write an online column for Psychology Today entitled Fixing Families and have provided trainings nationally.

You’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious or even depressed. You aren’t as confident as you’d like to be. You're struggling with your emotions and wanting better solutions for how to cope with the stress in your life. It’s painful to not feel in control of our emotions and negative thoughts can make it hard to feel good about yourself, your relationships and your outlook on life. I help adults through individual therapy with anxiety, stress management, life transitions and changes, relationship issues, self-esteem, depression, and anger management issues through individual therapy.

I work with people struggling to resolve feelings of anxiety or sadness, or those who find that relationship challenges seem to keep repeating themselves. Together we embark on a journey of discovery to identify and understand the patterns operating below awareness that inform expectations, and color perceptions. Whether working with adults, adolescents, couples or caregivers, I believe therapy should be an engaging and dynamic process where all thoughts and feelings are welcomed. Healing occurs when we allow ourselves the freedom to express the scope of our emotions, and my sessions are as likely to include laughter as tears.

Welcome! Beginning therapy is a courageous step in the healing process. I have seen firsthand the transformative results of psychotherapy. I practice counseling from a relational depth perspective. This means focusing on the relationship I build with clients as a cornerstone of treatment and working with the unconscious, which is the root of most distress. I help clients work through symptoms which are causing conflict in their lives, keeping them from achieving their goals, and preventing them from feeling a sense of overall well-being.

Accepting new clients: I approach my work through the lens of attachment – how we cope in moments of disconnection with those we love the most – with empathy, cultural awareness, and validation around being a human – moreover, a parent. As a mother to young children, I understand the beauty and despair of parenthood. As a therapist, I understand the impact our childhood experiences have on how we show up in our adult relationships. I meld my experience and training to support both women and men along the path of reconnecting with themselves and with those whom they love most.

I have explored the mind-body connection since 1980. I use healing and recovery models of therapy that respect my clients' strength and potential. I specialize in gentle and supportive methods of assisting clients to overcome the recurrent effects of trauma. I have advanced training and experience with mind/body modalities including EMDR to facilitate healing and foster posttraumatic growth. This generally involves helping a client learn to manage the recurrent symptoms of trauma and concurrently address and heal from the cause.

How can I find a therapist in Charlottesville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
