Terri Higgins
Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC
Charlottesville, VA 22902
For those in the foster care and adoption community, I strive to build healthy attachments between parents and children, pre and post- adoption work.
My approach to therapy uses Internal Family Systems, an insight-oriented therapy which is a powerful method for understanding conflict, trauma, and defenses, and for promoting healing, change, self-empowerment and self-compassion. I view the counseling process as a partnership and an opportunity for you to learn more about yourself. We will honor the patterns that have kept you safe in the past, while at the same time gently removing the barriers that have kept you from being the person you wish to be. I utilize EMDR in my work as well to address trauma that happened long ago, as well as any recent trauma.

My hope is to assist you in transforming those painful, self limiting beliefs and old patterns into realistic and affirming ones. The process I most often use incorporates bi-lateral stimulation of the brain. This is a simple technique that often has profound results. It has been shown to move client's very quickly towards the core healing which is central to lasting results. One of the key benefits of this therapy is the ability to approach new situations /people with creativity, clarity, and new problem solving techniques. This often occurs spontaneously as part of the process.

Emily Webb Olsen
Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, LCMHC, RYT200
Charlottesville, VA 22902
I specialize in trauma, attachment, infertility, adoption, perinatal mental health, and generational trauma.
I work with people who are tired of talking about it. They've done the work. They know their patterns, they can trace them back, and something is still stuck. That's usually when people find me. I'm Emily, a therapist, yoga teacher, and owner of Big Oak Wellness in Roanoke, Virginia. Most of what keeps us stuck isn't in our heads, it's in the body. Nervous system responses we developed long before we had the words for what was happening to us. Understanding it doesn't undo it. We have to actually feel it to move it.

As a strengths-based and trauma-informed therapist, I am passionate about helping clients to repair deeply held wounds, especially relational wounds, which are often at the core of symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and addictive behaviors. Though I work with clients to help alleviate their troubling symptoms, my work is more fully anchored in the belief that the sensitive exploration of underlying injuries enables not just symptom-reduction but transformation and growth.

You've done the work, read the books, tried talk therapy, maybe more than one kind, and yet your system still won't settle. The anxiety, the hypervigilance, the brain fog, the sense of being stuck in a loop you can see but can't think your way out of. That's not a failure of effort or willpower. Often it's a nervous system that learned to protect you and never got the signal that it's safe to settle and rest.

I am here for for couples and individuals tired of the same relationship problem showing up over and over. We might be a fit if: - You and your partner keep having the same fight, just about different topics — or you notice the same dynamic repeating across relationships, friendships, or even at work - You (or your partner) shut down, over-function, or over-apologize under conflict, and aren't sure why - You've done "talk about your feelings" therapy before and want to experience doing something with them and actually feeling different - You are ready to break out of old patterns keeping you trapped in the same dynamics

Life can feel heavy when you’re carrying anxiety, self-doubt, past experiences, or patterns that just won’t seem to change. These challenges can impact your relationships, your sense of self, and how you show up day to day. But those patterns don’t define you, and they don’t have to stay the same. In our work together, we’ll begin to uncover what’s beneath the surface, bringing awareness to what’s been holding you back and creating space for real, lasting change.

I provide therapy from the belief that therapy is a collaborative journey in which, together, we identify what gets in the way of life goals. Then we create a vision along with a plan to go from where you are to where you want to be in their life. I have participated in extensive training as a family and couples therapist with over 10 years of practice experience. Families in which one member exhibits the symptoms of ADHD, ADD, oppositional and defiant behaviors, impulsive and violent behaviors, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and learning disabilities work well with me.

I believe in the human spirit and our capacity to make positive changes in all aspects of our lives, even in the face of adversity. By exploring our thought patterns, we can better identify feelings that affect our actions on a daily basis. We can then make effective changes that improve the quality of our lives, decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression and providing us with a more peaceful and joyful life. I also believe in the benefit of human interaction with other loving creatures; you will meet my little Yorkie-Poo therapy partner, Mojo, when you come to visit me. He loves children and adults.

Being a psychotherapist means being available to you in a way that is different to other forms of human relatedness. It means I listen to the painful events and relationships troubling you in your life and open a conversation about them between us. This conversation is private and confidential, yet allows for the most honest and accessible way to both explore and understand your reactions and feelings. Although the foundation of my knowledge lies in the psychoanalytic tradition, I incorporate contemporary knowledge and methods that have developed since Sigmund Freud's first discoveries at the end of the 19th century.

I work with people struggling to resolve feelings of anxiety or sadness, or those who find that relationship challenges seem to keep repeating themselves. Together we embark on a journey of discovery to identify and understand the patterns operating below awareness that inform expectations, and color perceptions. Whether working with adults, adolescents, couples or caregivers, I believe therapy should be an engaging and dynamic process where all thoughts and feelings are welcomed. Healing occurs when we allow ourselves the freedom to express the scope of our emotions, and my sessions are as likely to include laughter as tears.

Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
