Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists in Charlottesville, VA
I use mindfulness, existential-humanistic, acceptance/commitment, CBT, EMDR, narrative, and Gottman Method techniques to help individuals achieve their desired results.
While we possess many innate tools to cope effectively with adversity, there are many factors that can serve as barriers to achieving and maintaining a healthy balance in life. Whether these barriers relate to internal processes or external circumstances, I believe that it is often beneficial for us to practice vocalizing our experience to others. Doing so can serve as a protective factor, helping us to cope more effectively with any radical internal monologues that may pop up from time to time.

My areas of special interest are couples therapy, acceptance-based and existential approaches with an emphasis on extending growth on the self to important relationships.
As of Winter 2025-26: Openings available for new individual clients, couples, and assessments.
Therapy can be a powerful and life-changing event in one's life. When working with clients I strive to guide them to create and continue to grow a life that has strong purpose and impact. Good therapy work includes deep exploration, but also improves essential connections with important people and consciously engaging with the world in each moment, whether it be easy or hard, full of darkness or light, in order to live more fully.

Therapy can be many things - processing a difficulty, feeling less alone, metabolizing emotions, recognizing defenses, expanding self-awareness, understanding your attachment history, seeing choices, clarifying needs, updating narratives, reclaiming personal responsibility, holding things more lightly, a space for self acceptance and personal development.
Welcome - I am a licensed psychotherapist specializing in relational, insight-oriented, humanistic therapy that incorporates mindfulness, depth psychology, and skills for emotional awareness and regulation. My approach draws on elements from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, emotion-focused, narrative, and attachment-based work. I often support clients who either want to focus short-term (10-20 sessions) on a specific issue OR longer term clients who know they function best when they have a regular, warm, open-minded space for self-exploration, personal growth, and healing old relational wounds and patterns that no longer serve.

Currently accepting couples and individuals as new clients.
I help people make sense of how their early relationships, past experiences, body responses, and cultural background all show up in their lives and relationships today. I offer individual and couples therapy that’s grounded in curiosity, compassion, and zero judgment. Together, we’ll look at what you’re really feeling underneath and how those feelings might be leading to habits that actually push connection and authenticity away. Once you start to understand those patterns, change becomes possible.

Hello, my name is Tina Curran-Taylor, LPC. My favorite areas of practice include trauma, addictions, depression and anxiety including all the nuanced behaviors that can present within these categories. Many people have the misconception that you must dig relentlessly into the past to release the pain or the limiting beliefs and though the past informs our current approach to life, we only want to explore as much as it takes to release the chains.

My approach is person-centered and flexible, drawing primarily on the modalities of EMDR, IFS, ACT, DBT, and CBT.
If you've been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns you can't quite explain, you're not alone - and you don't have to figure it out by yourself. Perhaps you're pursuing therapy due to feeling exhausted from holding it all together, wondering why certain feelings keep resurfacing despite your best efforts, or feeling unsteady during periods of growth, transition or loss. Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, especially when you're already dealing with anxiety, stress, or the impact of past experiences. My goal is to offer you a space where you feel genuinely heard, respected, and supported, just as you are.

You may be longing to feel more at peace with yourself and your life. Maybe you're ready to build confidence, feel less anxious, or ease the weight of depression and past pain. Perhaps you’re seeking clarity in your relationships, or you've noticed a pattern of caring for others while neglecting your own needs. Life can feel heavy when you're carrying so much, and it’s easy to forget that you are worthy and deserving of time and space to focus on yourself. Your experiences don’t have to define you. Whatever you're carrying, you're not alone, and you don't have to go through it by yourself.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
