I am a Resident in Counseling at Charlottesville Integrated Psychiatry, which has recently merged with Full Life Counseling. It is my joy to work with people to help them experience healing, empowerment, and safety. I believe that everyone has within them the capacity for growth and healing, but we sometimes need help tapping into that capacity. Using a compassionate, person-centered approach, I build affirming, collaborative relationships with my clients to support their growth, whether they are struggling with anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, life stage issues, spirituality, questions of identity, or other difficulties.

My name is Chris, and I am deeply committed to helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with care and intention. When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to disconnect or feel stuck. However, from my experience, when we create space to explore our emotions in a safe, supportive environment, we tap into our natural resilience and open the door to growth, connection, and fulfillment.

Emerging knowledge of mindfulness and neurobiology inform my emotion-focused style of counseling. I approach clients not as diagnoses but as people experiencing disconnection from others and self, who have within them the desire and capability for change. I believe that healing occurs within the safety of a warm therapeutic relationship, in which we make space for compassionately exploring our emotions and meaning-making.

I offer a genuine connection to my patients, which I believe to be the heart of psychotherapy. Each individual is unique, and so is their purpose in seeking therapy. I prioritize the relationship with individuals above any tool, or technique. As a result, I have seen my patients change and have witnessed their transformation.

Do you feel weighed down by anxiety, past hurts, or stress that makes it hard to move forward? Maybe you’ve been coping the best you can—juggling relationships, parenting, or life transitions—but inside, it still feels like too much, or simply not quite right. My first priority is creating a safe, connected space where you don’t have to carry it all alone. We’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, noticing what’s helping while gently exploring what’s getting in the way. Together, we’ll build awareness, strengthen your inner resources, and move toward a way of living that feels more grounded, easeful, and authentic.

I believe my job is to work myself out of a job. It is my task to assist individuals in cultivating the skills and understanding they need to optimize their well being in all spheres in their life. Through an honest, trusting collaborative relationship I endeavor to facilitate my client's capacity to create healthy relationships, both with themselves and others. I strive to be flexible in supporting clients in the manner in which they need versus an authoritative manner which presumes I know what is best for them. My goal is to assist them in determining their best selves.

I am Ann Bohr Benner, LCSW. I like to work with adults of all ages who are dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, and/or grief. We start with and come back to client goals. I think holistically about people who are in distress. Sleep, diet, relaxation, exercise, social support, and spiritual life all can contribute to change. Then self-awareness, insight, and intentional behavior change are important. I endeavor to create a safe space in which each person can be exactly where they are, and eventually, the natural inclination to heal and grow can flourish.

Hello, my name is Tina Curran-Taylor, LPC. My favorite areas of practice include trauma, addictions, depression and anxiety including all the nuanced behaviors that can present within these categories. Many people have the misconception that you must dig relentlessly into the past to release the pain or the limiting beliefs and though the past informs our current approach to life, we only want to explore as much as it takes to release the chains.

You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve the person you are today. Maybe big emotions feel hard to manage, past experiences still weigh heavily, or you’re tired of your mind getting in the way of the life you want to live. You want relief AND real change. You’re looking for a space that feels supportive and honest, where you can better understand yourself, build effective coping skills, and move toward a life that feels more grounded, meaningful, and aligned with your values.

All of our behaviors are adaptive, even the ones we wish to change. There was likely a time and place that even the most pesky of habits helped to protect or get you through difficult times. We will explore the "when" and "why" of your past parts as we work to create change in the here and now. I appreciate life can be difficult, relationships overwhelming, and decision-making about major transitions both exciting and paralyzing. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress from work, relationship problems, or finding your voice, we can work towards your goals together..

Life's journey is rough. Not every path is smooth or easy and many are difficult and even dangerous. There are times we need someone to walk with us; perhaps help us find a new direction. Having someone that understands because he's been there, makes all the difference in the world. In addition to working with couples and families, he enjoys bringing hope to men. He understands the struggles men face. He shares life and relational skills, including: developing problem solving skills, overcoming depression, reducing anxiety, having victory over addiction, growing through life development stages and recovering from the symptoms of trauma.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
