I can provide support for students coping with adolescent stressors, which are often seen in students experiencing anxiety or those on the autism spectrum.
I have over 40 years of experience working as a school psychologist in K-12 settings. My expertise is in psycho-educational assessment to identify learning difficulties (in reading, writing and math), ADHD, and socio-emotional/behavioral difficulties that impact academic performance. These results form the foundation for accommodations and interventions that enable students to learn at their potential. Psycho-educational assessment measures cognitive abilities while identifying processing strengths and weaknesses, which enhance our understanding of students’ needs in the learning environment.

I am a child, teen , and family psychologist and Past-President of the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists, with 30+ years of practice. My background and the core of my work is individual/family therapy from toddler-hood to adult. I have skills and a passion for working with families in a Collaborative Divorce process, a non-litigated process that actually can foster growth in communication and decision-making skills, and I also enjoy providing consultation to coparents following divorce. These ALL build resilience – a core theme in this work!

Our services are driven by the needs of our clients and achieving health and wellness outcomes by strengthening individuals, families, and communities. Our approach is based on the integration of mind and body rather than independent organs or systems divided by specialties or functions. Having a common framework as the foundation of our work helps our interdisciplinary team effectively communicate across specialties and uniquely allows us to address specific challenges across multiple facets of life, effectively identify and evaluate options and opportunities, design more effective treatments, and, ultimately, solve problems.

As your therapist, I will guide you to recognize learned patterns of thinking, acting and feeling that may be creating suffering in your life. Together we will explore where and why you learned those patterns. Once fully understood, you will find the courage to transform those learned patterns into healthier ones. I will then guide you to practice these new and healthier patterns in the therapy room as well as in your life outside the therapy room. Once you transform old patterns of relating into healthier ones, you will feel lighter, more confident and happier.

I am passionate about the connection with one's core self. I have found that trauma and transitions can result in a disconnect with the core self and that peace and healing can be achieved by repairing this connection. Pre-adolescence, adolescence, and early adulthood are times marked by a myriad of major transitions. This process of transitioning between life stages continues across the lifespan. Additionally, a disconnect with the core self may be rooted in trauma or transition that happened many years ago. To this end, I provide services to preteens, teens, and adults.

Therapy has as its fulcrum a secure, connected, trustworthy relationship. Within this safe zone there is opportunity for discovery, healing, questioning, empowerment, questioning, and goal-setting. I see therapy as an open-ended, yet purposeful opportunity for all of these, and more. I strive to help clients explore and expand their sense of themselves, and to live and relate authentically, both in relationships and in vocation. I have a gentle, affirmative clinical presence, at points serene and curious, at others interactive, with humor as an adjunct.

We all experience times of feeling disconnected from family, friends, or coworkers. When this human experience is prolonged or frequent it may lead to unskillfull coping and greater suffering. I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF CONNECTION WITH OTHERS AND I KNOW THIS PROCESS MUST START WITH CONNECTING TO OURSELVES. My clients range from teenagers to older adults who seek support with relationships, grief/loss, depression, anxiety, and life transitions.

I focus on individual Trauma, Couples, and Family. With years of family and individual work I've developed a flexible ability to meet adult and teen needs from parenting, marital, to trauma and developmental transitions of life. My work is informed from an attachment approach where I seek to create safety with you to untie negative relational patterns and move into greater awareness and courage. I assist you in rediscovering your resiliency to pull you beyond the old patterns. To assist my clients when balance is upset by an underlying issue of trauma, my training in AEDP coupled with EMDR and somatic approaches is well suited.

My specializations include family therapy, child & adolescent therapy, transitional periods & life coaching.
Life does not come with a handbook. Failure is a word which disconnects us from our innate ability to connect, seek, create, gather and master. Therapy serves as a resource. With individualized and therapeutic evidenced based practices we will learn to move past survival and thrive- creating a more congruent life. As your therapist we will find interventions to match your needs and create long term change together for yourself & your relationships.

When looking for a therapist, ask someone that knows the reputation of the therapists in this area. Ask a friend, a family doctor, a pastor or a professional. They know the best therapist in the area. Don't pick a therapist simply based on what the therapist has written about her/himself or solely on the price. This is your life; it's your marriage or your family. 90% of our clients come from "word of mouth". We maintain a respected reputation due to the staff's professional skills and therapeutic effectiveness & reliability - we've been here since 1986. ---We are proud to be a Veteran Owned counseling practice.---

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
