Are you noticing that anxiety, depression, or stress have been making it harder to manage lately—and that alcohol or other substances have started to feel like your main way of coping? You might feel stuck in a cycle where stress, anxiety, low mood, or life pressures build up, and substances become a way to temporarily escape or get through the day. Over time, this can affect relationships, motivation, confidence, and overall sense of stability.

Lately it feels like the only certainty is uncertainty. Everywhere you look people are stressed and sometimes it feels hard to breathe. There's a lot of temptation to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and keep pressing on like everything is okay. But the truth is everything is not okay. The fact that you are struggling doesn't make you weak...it makes you Human. You can choose to keep going as you are and hope things get better on their own. Or you can go for the life you were meant to live. Monday Courage is about the courage it takes to break your rules and start living life with purpose.

When your love relationship feels strained, the ache of disconnection can be hard to bear. One of you wants to talk and resolve, while the other needs space to breathe. One reaches out for reassurance, the other retreats to keep the peace. Over time, these moments become a familiar and painful dance of pursuit and withdrawal that leaves you both feeling alone, misunderstood, and unseen. We specialize in adult love relationships and the science of secure attachment. Through Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), we help you slow down, understand your cycle, and name what lies beneath - a longing to feel close, valued, and heard.

Navigating daily challenges feels like a complete burden, where all you can think about is the rollercoaster ride of the day you are forced to endure and how you will make it through. You are constantly worrying about the “what ifs” or the next problem to come your way, which sends you into a downward spiral of heavy thoughts and emotions. Feeling low and on edge is the norm, and it's becoming too much to bear. Feeling in control, confident, and at peace feels like a dream, but that’s your goal. You want to wake up without feeling your heart or thoughts racing, leading to a negative headspace. You want to feel in control of you.

It's not often people get to say how much they enjoy their work, but I do. As the co-founder of Insight Into Action Therapy, I get to meet fascinating people and assist them as they navigate through tough times. I do so through individual and family therapy. In addition, I facilitate several groups, primarily our Dual Diagnosis Recovery Program which is designed to help individuals with co-occuring substance abuse and mental health problems. Besides therapy, I provide community educations and lectures on various topics impacting individuals and the society as a whole.

My passion is helping others figure out how to be happy. My journey through life has led me to social work. I began my career helping at-risk youth avoid being removed from their homes. For the last four years, I have been seeing clients of all ages for Outpatient Therapy. Teenagers are my favorite group to work with, but I have been able to help people of all ages and walks of life for many different issues. I bring my own life experiences and wisdom to my clients, and they seem to be comforted knowing they are not alone.

FAQ - Black and African American Counselling
As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?
Working with an African American therapist can often mean that you start from a place of shared understanding with a therapist rather than having to explain your experience from scratch. A therapist who shares your racial identity is more likely to understand the specific pressures shaping your mental health, including navigating racism, cultural identity, and the overall experience of being Black in the United States. They are also more likely to understand the role that family, community, and cultural expectations play in your life without requiring a lengthy explanation. This shared foundation can create a greater sense of safety in the therapeutic relationship and make it easier to open up at the start of therapy.

Are there Black therapists who specialize in working with Black men or Black women?
Yes, many Black therapists have specific experience working with Black men or Black women. While therapists who work with Black clients broadly address concerns relevant to all genders, like anxiety or depression, those with a gender-specific focus are equipped to work with you on the particular ways that race and gender may intersect. For example, some therapists may specialize in working with Black women on topics like body image or maternal mental health, while other therapists may work with Black men on topics such as relationships or masculinity.

Do Black therapists offer marriage and couples counseling?
Yes, many Black therapists are trained in couples and marriage counseling and can work with partners navigating a wide range of relationship challenges. Therapists who identify as Black may have a better understanding of the cultural dynamics surrounding marriage, family roles, and conflict that are specific to African American communities and can work with you and your partner without making assumptions about your background.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with Black clients?
The initial consultation, which is typically a brief phone or video call, is the right time to raise a therapist’s experience working with Black clients. You can ask specific questions, such as "Do you have experience working with Black clients?" or more broad questions, such as "How do you approach cultural identity in your practice?". During the initial consultation, you can also ask whether they have undertaken training in cultural competence and how they would handle a situation where a cultural misunderstanding arose in therapy. A therapist who responds to these questions thoughtfully and without defensiveness is a good sign they are equipped to work with you effectively.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?
The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
