You’re doing all you can, but it feels like you're unraveling. Maybe you’re stuck in anxious thoughts that won’t quiet down, haunted by past experiences, navigating a life stressor, or parenting a child whose struggles leave you feeling helpless. It’s exhausting holding it all together when your mind and body are asking for relief. It can be painful to watch your child overwhelmed by big emotions they don’t understand -resulting in meltdowns or clinginess. Therapy can be a place to breathe again, understand the weight you're carrying, and begin to feel like yourself —stronger and in control.

I believe in the importance of a person’s story and meeting each person where they are in the present moment, while honoring experiences from the past. There are often events or themes within a person’s childhood that can lead them to experience difficulties later in their lives if left unresolved. These difficulties often appear in the form of unhealthy traits or toxic cycles within romantic relationships or friendships. Other times, there are negative thoughts such as “I should have known better” or “I always do something wrong” that constantly circle in a person’s mind.

I work with a trauma-informed, attachment-based approach using models like the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
Are you and your partner feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward? As a couples therapist, I often hear things like, "We’ve tried everything, but we still feel like we’re going in circles," or "We want to reconnect, but we don't know how to move past the hurt." Conflict, sexual disconnection, and broken trust can leave even strong relationships feeling fragile. Constant arguments, betrayal, infidelity, or ambivalence about whether to stay or leave can make it hard to feel hopeful.

I view therapy as a collaborative process where the client is the expert on themselves, and the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in creating change. It is important to have a safe, empowering, and supportive environment in order to examine hurtful relationship patterns and emotional difficulties, and in turn change negative self-evaluations to better respond to life's challenges. I am genuinely interested in and committed to helping my clients gain insight and express their needs in order to engage in more healthy relationships and live the life they want.

For over 16 years, it’s been a privilege for me to be a therapist. My passion is helping clients heal from different types of stressors, relational issues, and traumas (PTSD, complex-developmental, generational, attachment, religious, etc). These issues often lead to symptoms of anxiety, depression, impulsive/addictive behaviors, eating disorders, and personality disorders – all which I have experience and success in working with. I am only doing Telehealth (virtual therapy) at this time and can see clients who live in Virginia.

I utilize a somatic, attachment-based, psychodynamic approach that gently explores old wounds and releases suppressed emotions which influence what you believe about yourself, determine the roles you play in life, and impact how you show up in the world.
By offering a journey of corrective experiences, I work with the parts of you that are stuck in the past due to being hurt, wronged, shamed, abandoned, or simply misunderstood. Through a compassionate, non-judgmental guided process, you will reach new understandings of who you truly are and what your possibilities are in the world.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
