Life can feel overwhelming or daunting at times and the first step in healing can be challenging. Struggles with motivation, energy, or even racing thoughts can leave us feeling lost. Finding someone who not only can listen to your concerns but also provide guidance and targeted goal setting can aid in feeling grounded and able to make sound decisions.

If you are struggling with the hyper-vigilance of trauma, the unique demands of military life, or the explosive emotions that often come with the teenage years, I am here to help you find your footing.
I provide a direct, compassionate space for those who feel "misfit" in traditional therapy. By combining the logic of CBT with the emotional regulation skills of DBT, I help you rewire the brain’s response to stress. Therapy with me is a partnership.

You’ve been holding it together for everyone else… but inside, you’re exhausted. You’re showing up for work, family, church—but you’re running on fumes. You smile when you’re supposed to, but anxiety, stress, or old wounds are simmering just under the surface. Some days you’re not even sure what you feel—just that you’re tired of feeling this way. I’m Dr. Jessica Dennis, LPC, and I help people who are tired of pretending they’re okay. My clients are often strong, capable adults who have been “the one everyone leans on” for years—but you’re finally ready to make space for yourself. I offer therapy that fits you.

I work with teens 16+, adults, as well as couples, and families.
I believe in the importance of a person’s story and meeting each person where they are in the present moment, while honoring experiences from the past. There are often events or themes within a person’s childhood that can lead them to experience difficulties later in their lives if left unresolved. These difficulties often appear in the form of unhealthy traits or toxic cycles within romantic relationships or friendships. Other times, there are negative thoughts such as “I should have known better” or “I always do something wrong” that constantly circle in a person’s mind.

You know your reactions don’t make sense. You’ve read the books and you recognize your patterns. You overthink, shut down, stay on high alert, or keep replaying what happened. Insight alone hasn’t changed those reactions and you’re still finding yourself stuck in the same patterns. I help adults who understand their patterns, but can’t change them on their own. Many of my clients come in saying, "What if something goes wrong?" “I don’t even recognize myself anymore," and “I avoid anything that reminds me of what happened.” And through this work, they leave feeling clear-minded, empowered, and grounded.

Are you feeling constantly drained, overwhelmed by life’s demands, and unsure of where to turn? Do you find yourself lying awake at night, consumed by worry, and wondering how much longer you can keep going like this? The weight of depression and anxiety can feel suffocating, making even the simplest tasks seem impossible and leaving you emotionally and physically exhausted. You might feel as though you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of fatigue, stress, and frustration. Maybe you’re questioning why it’s so hard to keep up with everything when everyone else seems to be managing. You don’t have to face this struggle alone.

You keep finding yourself in the same relationship patterns, overgiving, overthinking, or feeling responsible for others, no matter how aware you are. You may feel exhausted, disconnected, or unsure how to break the cycle. If you’ve experienced trauma or distressing events, whether in relationships, childhood, or high-stress environments like the military, it can still shape how you show up today. You’ve learned how to stay strong, but not how to feel safe, secure, or at ease in your relationships or within yourself.

Childhood and teenage years can be particularly challenging and whilst therapeutic work is usually individual appointments, I also work with parents and families to further enhance and embed skills development and coping styles.
Throughout our lifetime, we experience difficulties and struggles that can feel overwhelming. My clients experience low mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and mood disorders; sometimes they have found ways to manage their distress through self-harming or disordered eating behaviors. These struggles also impact family life, relationships and education or work. I work in a compassionate and motivated manner to understand each individual's unique experience and to develop a therapeutic approach that enhances skills and coping. I draw from a range of approaches to create a therapeutic plan that is unique to each person.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
