I have experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults. While I use a variety of approaches (including AEDP, Existential Theory, Attachment Theory, EFT, and DBT), ultimately I like to let our work together inform which approach suits our time best. I am knowledgeable about trauma-informed practice and bring a lot of my own life experiences into the sessions, through my work as a teacher, professional firefighter, and professionaI musician.

Using a primarily psychodynamic approach, we’ll explore how early experiences and attachment dynamics continue to echo in your present life.
Therapy with me is relational and depth-oriented, yet grounded. I will help you slow down enough to notice what’s happening beneath the surface, gently question what no longer fits, and experiment with new ways of relating. My hope is that you learn how to move toward connection without abandoning yourself in the process.

I believe that healing is ongoing, by exploring what feels most vulnerable. I feel called to hold space for women and men who are dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship challenges & the lasting impacts of trauma. I support my clients through issues that are hindering them from living the life they want and from being the person they aim to be in their relationships. I value supporting people in shifting how they view themselves and the world we share through improving self-esteem, self-worth & relational dynamics.

I am a good fit for helping couples or individuals navigate relationship conflict with partners and family members. I can work well with those struggling with low confidence, self-worth issues or past childhood issues, if they are willing to process and work to create change. I would fit best with those who are stuck, but willing to take steps to experiment towards developing and achieving goals to engage more fully in their own lives. I am licensed to practice in Virginia and North Carolina, and I can be found on Grow Therapy and BetterHelp. I will also be launching an option on Simple Practice.

Life is hard, and we are often our toughest critic. As an EMDR therapist, I am passionate about focusing on experiences and relationships that have caused people to sustain negative beliefs about themselves. I find that those beliefs, whether we are aware of them or not, are often at the core of anxiety, depression, relational difficulties, and addictive behaviors. I work with clients to uproot those beliefs and forge a new way of living, both in mind and body.

On the outside, it may look like you are holding everything together, but inside you feel anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck. Your mind does not slow down, relationships feel draining, and it becomes harder to feel confident in yourself or where your life is headed. Do you overthink conversations or avoid situations because of anxiety? Do you find yourself people pleasing, struggling with anger, losing confidence, or repeating the same unhealthy patterns? Maybe you are tired of feeling this way and know something needs to change, but you are not sure where to start.

Would it help to lean on someone as you figure out why you feel overwhelmed, lonely, scattered, sad, numb, scared, or stuck in conflict? If you choose to, together, we will work through to the side where connection, calm, and self-worth reside. I truly believe we all have what it takes to foster well-being if we rely on our strengths and supports. By first creating an accepting and attuned space, I help clients access and bolster their skills for mindful self-compassion, empathy, insights, and resilience. The culturally sensitive and attachment-informed techniques we practice get tailored to your situation, values, and capabilities.

I most frequently utilize CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Psychodynamic theory.
Are you feeling weighed down by anxiety, depression, mood swings, or relationship challenges? Struggling with alcohol or drug use, or feeling caught in patterns like codependence? Maybe you’re unsure about starting therapy or have had a less-than-great experience in the past. I understand that reaching out for help can feel daunting, but therapy doesn’t have to be unpleasant—it can be a safe, supportive space for growth and healing.

I work with both individuals and couples who are longing for deeper connection, healing, and understanding. Relationships can be hard, especially when old hurts or well-worn patterns keep showing up. If you and your partner find yourselves stuck in cycles of conflict, distance, misunderstanding, or sexual concerns, you’re not alone. Often, partners bring different attachment styles into a relationship. One may lean in, pushing for closeness, resolution, or reassurance, while the other pulls away, hoping to calm things down or avoid making it worse. Over time, this cycle impacts other parts of your relationship, including sex.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
