Are you ready to feel empowered and notice you feel most relaxed with animals and in nature? Perhaps, traditional-talk therapy doesn't feel quite right for you and you're curious about an experiential approach to heal and grow. When working with me and our amazing animals (horses, goats, dogs) on the farm, you can anticipate learning to leverage your strengths, building resilience and finding meaning through challenges. I provide care for children, adolescents, adults and families, many of whom need help with anxiety, depression, stress, panic attacks, trauma, PTSD, grief, ADHD, family issues, and coping with disease and disability.

In my experience as a counselor, I have come to understand how unique each of us truly are. We each come with our own unique experiences, relationships, wounds and beliefs that have been taught to us throughout our life. However, what is also true about each of us is that there is goodness and strength inherent just in who we are and who we are made to be. As such, I seek to walk with each individual I work with to uncover these strengths, untangle the past, and to heal from these wounds and negative beliefs we might be carrying. I work with individuals seeking to overcome anxiety, trauma, abuse or any other wounds in their lives.

Assessments include dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia (learning disabilities in reading, writing, and math), plus ADHD and autism.
People come to us for different reasons. For some, it’s simply understanding. Maybe why reading takes so long, why writing is so stressful, or why relationships don’t click. For others, it’s not just understanding but also help. To make friends, to keep a scholarship that’s on the rocks, or to simply not cry during math homework every single night.

I also specialize in conducting evidence-based evaluations for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum disorders ( ASD), mood, anxiety, and personality disorders.
Seeking therapy can often be a difficult decision and can create anxiety and ambiguity about what the process may entail. As a clinician, I function from the foundation for a positive experience in therapy which first begins with establishing a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship. Doing so, can encourage positive growth towards goals. Therapy is facilitated with transparency about what to expect from the process and goals are formulated collaboratively. Interventions are recommended based on individual's goals and needs. Effective and open communication is encouraged about therapeutic process and progress on goals.

Your life can be better. Change for the better takes work, discipline, & hope. Dedication to the process with a qualified therapist is key & much of the work (and the progress) takes place between our hourly sessions. The best approach is to understand who you are, what you want, and where you want to go. Together we will, through solution-focused therapy & traditional psychotherapy, develop goals & a plan, implement the plan & periodically assess your progress. My goal is not to have you facing the same issues three years from now but to begin to see real, meaningful, life-changing results within months.

It's overwhelming to grow up in this new stress filled culture, dealing with the intense pressure of family, academics, peers, and now social media! When words are not enough, Art Therapy, a combination of counseling and art making, can bring to light the uncertainty that is felt on the inside. For children, the focus is on the process of art-making to practice healthy habits while improving executive functioning skills. For teens and Young Adults (18-25) finding meaning and purpose through artistic symbols/metaphors can reduce anxiety about the future. Anyone can do Art Therapy!

Autism Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for autism?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?
Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?
Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
