I help people who grew up in difficult or emotionally painful families untangle self-doubt, shame, and people-pleasing, so they can feel more comfortable being themselves. If you’ve spent your life taking care of others, feeling like you’re “too much” or “not enough,” or struggling to set boundaries, you’re not alone. The ways we learn to survive in childhood can follow us into adulthood in ways that leave us feeling stuck, anxious, or disconnected. With support, these patterns can be understood and changed. They don’t have to define us.

Teletherapy appts available within one week! Winston Churchill once said, "If you're going through hell, keep going." Well, that's easier said than done, right? I want to help you "keep going" through whatever hell you feel like you might be in and after you get past it (whatever that looks like for you), help you to learn skills to make it easier next time life comes at you full force. I've been working with adults for the last 14 years and truly cannot imagine doing anything else with my life! I seek to develop authentic, unique, connected relationships with all my clients.

I have worked with trauma survivors and those experiencing substance use challenges in the community and in residential programs.
Are you ready to make some changes in your life, but need the right person to get you started, wherever you might be? Taking the first step takes a lot of courage, and I’m committed to helping anyone start making the right changes. No two people are the same, and I believe the most important aspect of therapy is building a therapeutic alliance that enables you to achieve the things you are working towards. Whether that is improved self-esteem, healthier relationships, or finding joy in everyday life. I can support you in exploring and developing goals you create for yourself and break things down into manageable steps.

With over 20 years of experience, I help adults and adolescents navigate anxiety, ADHD depression, life transitions, relationship stress, substance use concerns.
You may feel visibly overwhelmed — anxious, low, stuck in relationship conflict, or relying on alcohol more than you’d like. Or you may appear to have it together while privately battling stress, overthinking, burnout, or self-doubt. Some clients also discover that untreated adult ADHD contributes to disorganization or frustration. You want to understand what’s happening, feel more steady, and make meaningful changes in how you live and relate.

Change can be frightening but exhilarating as well. As a psychotherapist helping people cope with various obstacles in life, I have come to believe we all have the potential to be successful and possess the tools we need to achieve our goals. The pace and direction will be up to you. I will help you think about your life issues and concerns differently and together we will develop strategies to handle them more effectively. Also, VASAP approved assessment and/ or sessions. Unfortunately, I am not accepting Tricare clients at this time.

In each of us there is a wise and compassionate Self. It is already there, and does not have to be created or developed. Too often, however, our access to this Self is obscured by protective and sometimes conflicting thoughts and emotions. These protections were put in place for a reason, but can become outdated and even dysfunctional as we mature. In our therapy together we will uncover what is being protected, release old patterns and emotions, and create space for this wise Self to take a larger role in your life.

I like to work with adults, young adults, and late adolescents dealing with depression, anxiety, interpersonal concerns, LGBTQ+ issues, and/or substance abuse difficulties, often using an action-oriented and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) approach. Of course, the approach will vary somewhat depending on the need. A licensed clinical psychologist, I have been in practice for 48 years, and previously served as director for the Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS) at Georgetown University for 15 years. Currently I am providing services virtually, by teletherapy, using a secure video platform.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
