I use mindfulness and Schema therapy to effectively help individuals understand and change maladaptive thought and behavior patterns stemming from childhood experiences.
Whether you're feeling stuck in cycles of anxiety, overwhelmed by past experiences, or struggling to stay organized and present in daily life — therapy can help you reconnect to your strengths and move forward with more clarity and self-trust. I specialize in working with individuals navigating anxiety, trauma, attachment challenges, and executive functioning issues. Many of my clients are highly capable and smart, but might feel scattered, self-critical, or burnt out. I offer a space where you can slow down, reflect, and feel genuinely seen - so healing becomes not just possible, but sustainable.

Using an eclectic approach that includes CBT, EMDR, mindfulness meditation and strengths based, I am able to provide services to a variety of individuals from different ethnic backgrounds, ages, and life experiences.
Seeing a therapist isn't only for people in major life crisis. People in everyday life situations can also benefit from therapy. We all need help at times to understand our feelings, deal with life's challenges and feel hopeful about the future. Life can feel like a roller coaster sometimes. It may take us high with the birth of a child or falling in love and it may drop us low mourning a loss, suffering abuse, or feeling immobilized by depression. Therapy can help you find ways to manage those emotions and promote your well-being.

I specialize in depression and anxiety, communication skills, couples counseling, grief and loss, single parenting, career counseling, and chronic illness. As a Resident in Counseling, I tend to use aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as we work together to help clients see immediate connections between their thoughts and their current actions. This often allows for acknowledgement and change to occur sooner, and clients can experience the satisfaction from the results of their hard work.

Helping children and teens talk, especially when they are hurting, overwhelmed, anxious, angry, or completely shut down, is often the hardest part for parents. I specialize in working with children, teens, and young adults, while also supporting adults and families through life's most challenging seasons. My focus is creating a safe, comfortable space where even the most reluctant kids can begin to open up, feel understood, and build trust. Many parents come to me saying, "my child just won't talk to me" or "they won't talk to anyone".

Success in life is about resilience, effective strategies, skill, and successful problem identification and solving. Relationship problems, problems at work, family problems, resolving trauma and abuse, the panic, despair, and/or rage that may be getting in your way, lack of direction in life and self-doubt, eating problems, spending problems, addictions, etc. - in short, the suffering you or a loved one is experiencing - center around the lack of these four things. I and the Graduate Residents who work with me have a proven record of helping many clients move toward the lives and the results they want.

I am person-centered and compassionate. I am an active and reflective listener who meets clients where they are and consults with them to gain a more desired outcome. If you or your loved one is a person who lives with any level intellectual/developmental, physical, behavioral or any other type of disability, you may often find it difficult to find therapists that will provide the counseling you need. The challenges that can at times be more than you can handle deserve a team (you and a supportive therapist) effort to overcome or bring under control. My name is Sonya A. Allen, and I am here for you.

Hello, I'm Mark. As we start our journey at the bottom of the mountain, we must understand there are several paths to the top. All of these paths have the potential to lead you to the summit, where you can find the view you've been looking for. You're going to choose your path, just as with many things in life. I will walk alongside you as we ascend the mountain, meeting daily goals along the way. As we move forward, we'll process the roots, rocks, caves, and canyons we traverse. Why do you keep tripping over them, and why are they holding you back?

My integrative approach combines supportive and insight-oriented therapies, CBT, and mindfulness.
Everyone has a unique story that shapes who they are today. Many people struggle internally with fear, shame, or doubt, which blocks us from understanding ourselves, making it difficult to connect with others. My approach is empathetic, collaborative, and respectful of each person's journey. Healing starts by developing an honest, genuine relationship with another person where you can feel truly heard, seen, and understood. I strive to provide a safe space for exploring your issues and challenges without judgment so that we can find meaning and purpose in your life experiences from which you can gain perspective.

Are you interested in a contemplative, mindfulness-based approach to utilizing your own capacity for compassion and growth?
My goal with each session is to have you leave with some bit of self-knowledge you didn't have before. Over time, these will open opportunities for you to break patterns of behavior that don't serve you well. In some cases I will prescribe homework that can involve journaling, reflection, meditation, lifestyle modification, and other techniques.

Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted? Whatever you’re dealing with deserves space to be heard. I aim to create that space—where you can feel at ease, silence, tears, and anger are respected, laughter and snacks are always welcome, and you don’t have to perform or “get it right.” Sessions often include warmth, lightness, and supportive challenge. We might move between exploring core beliefs and tackling everyday stress. I believe therapeutic connection is built through authenticity and collaboration. You hold the reins; I bring support, guidance, new skills, and a steady sounding board.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
