I help people who grew up in difficult or emotionally painful families untangle self-doubt, shame, and people-pleasing, so they can feel more comfortable being themselves. If you’ve spent your life taking care of others, feeling like you’re “too much” or “not enough,” or struggling to set boundaries, you’re not alone. The ways we learn to survive in childhood can follow us into adulthood in ways that leave us feeling stuck, anxious, or disconnected. With support, these patterns can be understood and changed. They don’t have to define us.

If you're a driven professional feeling trapped by the daily pressure to perform—yet secretly wrestling with alcohol or substance use that’s starting to strain both your personal integrity and career—you’re not alone. Perhaps you’re waking up with regret, masking the stress at boardroom meetings with a stiff drink, or feeling isolated beneath the appearance of success. The ache of disconnect between who you are inside and the polished version the world sees can feel unbearable.

I began helping others in 1990 as a Peer Counselor (Drug Exemption NCO) while on active duty in the Marine Corps. After earning degrees in Psychology and Social Work at UNCW/ECU, I obtained licensure to practice independently with the Virginia Board of Health Professionals in 2004. I am originally from the Hampton Roads area but have worked internationally with people from many different backgrounds. I have continued to support the military, as well as the community at large, for over 3 decades with evidence-based treatments for trauma (PTSD).

Often in an attempt to finish "unfinished" business, we reenact unresolved issues in hopes of a better outcome finding ourselves face to face with the mountain of pain looming large in our past. I specialize in treating individuals, couples, and groups struggling with addiction, compulsive behaviors, depression, trauma, and related issues. If you struggle with addiction, I use emotionally connective and psychodynamic therapy to help you reach abstinence and then recovery, pre or post rehab. If you are struggling with the out-of-control substance abuse merry-go-round, we can work together to improve your life.

We all experience challenges in life that are difficult to cope with and hard to overcome. Issues can range from difficulty adjusting to recent changes to more deeply rooted, long standing trauma. Substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, grief and loss and feelings of emotional insecurity and instability are frequently life limiting issues that can be changed. When we decide to make a change, professional help is advantageous because an outside perspective can be enlightening and it's hard to change ourselves. Humans just want to be comfortable in our own skin.

Whether you’re managing anxiety, depression, communication struggles, or major life transitions, my goal is to help you rediscover your strengths, rebuild confidence, and create more fulfilling connections with yourself and others. Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
