I view therapy as a collaborative process where the client is the expert on themselves, and the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in creating change. It is important to have a safe, empowering, and supportive environment in order to examine hurtful relationship patterns and emotional difficulties, and in turn change negative self-evaluations to better respond to life's challenges. I am genuinely interested in and committed to helping my clients gain insight and express their needs in order to engage in more healthy relationships and live the life they want.

I am a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist and Supervisor specializing in treating couples and families. The journey of life can be difficult. As humans, we "need emotional connection like we need oxygen” (Sue Johnson). Strong relationships enable us to move forward through life stresses and reach our potential. But when we are disconnected from others (or even from our own core values), we may experience depression, anxiety or despair; this lets us know we are outside of our truth and need to make a change. EFT is the roadmap I use to help couples, families and individuals heal, build bonds and access their core essence.

I also provide Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Interracial Couples Therapy, helping couples create a stronger bond and work through communication/ trust issues, infidelity, past traumas, tough life transitions, conflicts in integrating cultural/value differences, boundaries with families and the impact of a mental health diagnosis.
We all have a unique journey in life, as individuals and as couples, and I believe that our resilience is as unique as our journey. I work with clients to help them overcome distressing cycles that make them feel stuck and empower them to find stability, create healthier relationships and live an enriched life. Together we explore underlying emotions and find new ways of coping with past traumas, difficult life transitions, loss, relational distress and other mental health issues. While EMDR, mindfulness and cultural sensitivity are at the core of my practice, I also integrate Psychodynamic and CBT interventions.

Everyone agrees life gets really hard sometimes, yet many of us grow up believing we should dig deep and tough it out. The fact is, sometimes we need a little guidance. Careers, children, relationships, friends, even exercise all compete for our limited energy and attention. No wonder we sometimes feel so overwhelmed and misunderstood that even loading the dishwasher can lead to a fight. But times of challenge--even those as painful as an affair--also offer us the chance to learn who we are and grow closer to those who matter most to us.

Under an integrative umbrella, I employ methods including mindfulness, CBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and experiential and expressive arts therapies.
Therapy can benefit you wherever you are in life, whether it's in the midst of a crisis, if you're feeling distant from a partner or your parents, or if you simply want to know yourself better. Providing therapy is a sacred calling for me, and I am honored to empower either individuals, couples, families, or groups to reach goals or explore the unknown. I use a systemic approach to help clients in the context of environments and identities. Together, we can grow and become the authors of our own stories. By accepting who we are and our imperfections, we increase our ability to love ourselves and connect more deeply with others.

As a Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor Candidate, it's my privilege to walk alongside couples and individuals as they work on their most important relationships.
Feeling disconnected can happen in any loving relationship. Sometimes couples find themselves in patterns that leave them feeling stuck, frustrated, and unsure of what to do next. Through EFT ( Emotionally Focused Therapy), couples can restructure their bond by learning to reach and respond in new ways. While experiencing relationship distress, couples often struggle to turn toward one another and utilize each other as a resource for strength and healing. Couple therapy can be the perfect place to find your way back to your partner.

I utilize proven research-based interventions including internal family systems and emotionally focused therapy.
All of us feel times of heightened stress, sadness, and worry. For adolescents, this often comes as they navigate increased independence in a world of school, friends, family, and relationships. For adults in the hectic DC area, work-life balance often doesn’t feel very balanced at all, and many struggle for connection with family and friends. For families, there is often conflict and dissonance that arises as we grow and change. Sometimes this becomes just too much to manage on our own. As a therapist with 15+ years experience, I help clients work through these challenges and grow towards a place of security and connection.

I am also trained in couples' counseling and use Emotionally Focused Therapy to work with couples to improve their relationship.
I believe that everyone can heal, grow, and thrive through therapy. I enjoy working with clients to help them process trauma, loss, and grief and to help those who are suffering from depression and anxiety. Everyone needs connection and relationships in their lives. I help my clients become aware of their own needs, emotions, and fears so that they are better able to connect with others. My own experience with grief after losing my husband in a car accident forced me to grow and learn about recovery from catastrophic loss. We all face unique challenges and tragedies in our lives. Therapy can help us to feel less alone in our pain.

My couples work is founded in my training in both the Gottman method and Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy ( EFT ).
There is true courage in vulnerability and in using therapy to foster insight and growth. I'm here with you to share in your vulnerability and to work on challenges related to mood, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship problems, life transitions and stressors (including those related to having a baby), and more. And I am pleased to offer couple's therapy to couples at any stage of their relationship.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
