I practice adult psychotherapy that appreciates and explores the richness and complexity of interactions between body, mind, soul, and spirit. My therapeutic work aims to help clients not only to get 'unstuck' from current symptoms and problems, but also to 'look forward' to their next stage of self-growth. Working with an integral psychology, I draw upon cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and humanistic-existential treatment modalities but add meditation, guided imagery, and dream work. In addition to seeing individuals and couples, I guide groups on 'care of the soul', loss and grief and spirituality .

Sometimes those conversations take the form of counseling, sometimes coaching, but I am always drawing upon the wisdom and principles of psychology, theology, and spirituality .
My clients are searching for meaning and a sense of wholeness in their lives, sometimes in the midst of crisis, sometimes traveling through times of normative change. Although I am an ordained Presbyterian minister and consider my work a ministry of counseling, I value the diversity of our community and seek to meet people wherever they identify themselves to be and honor their unique stories, beliefs and perspectives.

If desired, we feel comfortable addressing religion/ spirituality issues.
Seeking help takes courage and strength. Sometimes we are simply surviving in our lives but desire to thrive. We may struggle with depression, anxiety, addictions, challenging relationships, loss of relationships, loss of self esteem or confidence, etc. I believe there are turning points in our lives when we are ready to work and we need someone who can help us. I have over 22 years working with clients and have been inspired by their strength, persistence, courage, vulnerability, desire to change and hope. Sometimes, when all feels dark and hopeless, we need the help of others. I am happy to help you in your journey.

I am interested in cultivating a gentle curiosity, attentiveness and, if possible, a sense of humor in the clients I am privileged to meet. Our family experience informs the way we experience ourselves and how we make our way in relationships. I'm interested in exploring practical avenues for effecting communication that includes mindful awareness, appropriate boundaries and empathic connection. As reactivity is practically identified and calming is learned, I want to leaven the re-discovery or re-defining of a life narrative where, courage, integrity and joy are woven in. I want to encourage growth in those areas where healing is needed.

Do you constantly find yourself asking, "Why does this keep happening to me?!". I can help you discover how you are manifesting your reality by the choices you are making. Most thoughts and behaviors are unconscious, therefore people often find themselves distressed regarding poor choices and feelings of powerlessness in their lives. I can help you make permanent changes in your life by guiding you toward uncovering subconscious motivators of your behaviors. I take an eclectic approach and tailor therapy to best meet your needs.

Urban living has its unique challenges, which can lead to stress, depression, anxiety, feelings of emptiness, a sense of loneliness and other highly charged feelings and experiences. Are you in transition, a "transplant" to the area or maybe you have lived here all of your life? Are you having relationship problems? Going through a break-up, separation or divorce? Are you experiencing difficulty in connecting with others? Maybe you are experiencing a crisis in your career, feeling mismatched/unfulfilled? Or are you feeling unhappy but can't figure out the source, the "why" you are feeling this way?

Life at times can be frustrating, and not because you have not tried your best, or “put your best foot forward.” Sometimes you find there are more questions than answers, more that is left that needs to be explored or understood, and you are unsure where to begin. This is not an uncommon place to be. Whether in relationships with a significant other, challenges with children, work stress, health issues, or significant life events, life can be a mixed bag that can leave you perplexed and sometimes wounded.

We are all on a path toward self-discovery, searching for our unique, personal destiny and life purpose. When we fall short of realizing happiness and peace within the American dream, we begin to lose hope and become anxious or depressed. As such, I offer therapy based on my mission statement: Changing Your Life By Engaging Your Soul! Human beings are so much more than a mere mind and body. Somehow our spirit, our soul, has lost its place in our society and in our psychology. I seek to reintroduce deeper meaning to everyday living by invigorating your spiritual energy.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
