Strategic Family Techniques inform my work with couples and families.
‘What’s your story?’ I ask because the stories we tell ourselves and about ourselves can offer tremendous insight. Narrative counselors like myself explore client stories for behaviors, expectations, perceptions, and values which fail to align in effective ways. We believe these incongruences are responsible (both directly and indirectly) for the miseries and hardships that prompt therapy. The work of therapy involves deconstructing what doesn’t make sense and reimagining what remains. I enjoy working with anyone whose story feels ‘stuck’ and wishes to reimagine themselves anew.

I have had the opportunity to work in schools, non-profits and hospital settings providing individual, family and group counseling support.
Change is hard. Transition is hard. Life is hard. It can take unexpected turns. Nonjudgmental support and guidance can make a difference. Does having the right support to help you navigate your stressors sound like a relief? Gaining tools and setting goals to move through this season can help lift your outlook and your mood. We can get stuck. We subscribe to others expectations. We can operate with a negative filter. We can compare ourselves to others. We deserve more, we are more and together we can obtain more. I look forward to helping you shine through this tough season.

We often think of childhood as a time of simplicity, joy, curiosity, and play. Yet for many, it is a time of stress, trauma, anxiety, and/or anger. Impulsivity, attention difficulties, learning delays, anxiety, and aggression often impede success at school, disrupt family relationships, and hinder friendships. My goal, as a play therapist, is to assist your child in processing their conflicts and struggles to support balance and peace. By meeting your child in their world of play, they experience being seen and understood, while developing skills of self-regulation, communication, and confidence.

I primarily work from a holistic, relational psychodynamic therapeutic approach with emphasis on family of origin, personal beliefs, mind/body connection, and attachment.
Change is difficult, and therapy is not a quick fix, but the benefits can be life-changing. After 15 years in the design world, I made the decision to return to school to get a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I work with individuals experiencing depression, loneliness, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, relationship issues, and more, to increase self-acceptance and self-awareness, build empathy and improve quality of relationships. My hope is to remain curious with you, to be a support to you as you express, explore, and discover who you are and who you want to be.

I am interested in cultivating a gentle curiosity, attentiveness and, if possible, a sense of humor in the clients I am privileged to meet. Our family experience informs the way we experience ourselves and how we make our way in relationships. I'm interested in exploring practical avenues for effecting communication that includes mindful awareness, appropriate boundaries and empathic connection. As reactivity is practically identified and calming is learned, I want to leaven the re-discovery or re-defining of a life narrative where, courage, integrity and joy are woven in. I want to encourage growth in those areas where healing is needed.

I work with individuals that really want help in re-building their lives after some sort of personal or family crisis.
Need help changing your life? I am the type of therapist for those individuals that don't have tons of time to figure out their past life issues. Through assessments, I am able to develop and implement a future focused plan with clear goals and an estimated timeframe for achievement. I am more of a non-traditional therapist & most of my clients have tried and failed at more traditional clinical therapy. My clients are usually referred by word of mouth as a last resort in hopes to establish major life change.

My approach stems primarily from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and is informed by mindfulness, holistic health, and family systems theory.
Over the past 13 years I have learned that the change process is collaborative and requires a unified focus between therapist and client. In therapy, the most positive outcomes occur when we develop a healthy therapeutic relationship and focus on the same goals. Building this relationship allows both therapist and client to feel comfortable while cultivating positive change. I practice from a wellness perspective that states everything we experience throughout our lives is a natural part of our development as individuals. I will meet you wherever you may be emotionally knowing that your life's journey has brought you to this place.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
